A day after a massive drug raid on the campus of San Diego State University in which 75 students were arrested, school officials on Wednesday suspended six fraternities until further notice.

The fraternities suspended were Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Theta, Theta Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Mu, a news release on the university's Web site said.

The fraternities were placed on an "interim suspension" until a "hearing into evidence gathered" in the raid, the university said.

The raid was the conclusion of about a year long investigation by the university and Drug Enforcement Administration into a drug ring involving students and an off-campus gang with ties to Mexican drug cartels, police said.

It was spawned by the 2007 sudden death of 19-year-old San Diego State University student and Alpha Phi sister Shirley Jennifer "Jenny" Poliakoff.

Miss Poliakoff died in her apartment the morning following a sorority dance. At the time of her death, she had cocaine and alcohol in her system but she didn't necessarily overdose, her parents told The San Diego Union Tribune.

The original 75 students charged included brothers of Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi, police said. It was unclear Wednesday night if brothers of other fraternities were also among those charged.

A Theta Chi brother sent out a mass text message to people police called his customers alerting them he and his associates in the drug dealing operation wouldn't be able to sell cocaine while they were away in Las Vegas, agents of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration said.

In the bust, police seized money, weapons, and drugs including cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, hash oil and methamphetamines, they said.

A total of four pounds of cocaine, 50 pounds of marijuana, 48 hydroponic marijuana plants, 350 ecstasy pills, 30 vials of hash oil, a shotgun, three pistols, three sets of brass knuckles and $60,000 in cash were among confiscated items, police said.

More than 130 transactions between undercover agents and sellers took place, police said.

Parents of Student Who Died Laud SDSU Efforts

A year after the sudden death of an Alpha Phi sister at San Diego State University, her parents say they finally have some closure to a very sad experience.

Nineteen-year-old Shirley Jennifer "Jenny" Poliakoff died May 6, 2007 - the day after attending a sorority formal. After her death, alcohol and cocaine were both found in her system, but she didn't die of an overdose, her parents Ray and Kim Poliakoff said.

A massive drug raid at the university came on the one-year anniversary of Jenny's death. A total of 96 people were arrested, among those including 75 students and 21 others including gang members with ties to Mexian drug cartels, police said.

An investigation into drug activity on the campus was launched by the university and federal Drug Enforcement Administration following Jenny's death, police said.

"If one kid gets saved, if ten kids get saved, then it's worth doing," Ray Poliakoff told The San Diego Union Tribune.

"We're happy about the fact that they chased after it," said Poliakoff, who thought it was frustrating at first the university hadn't done anything. "They could've chosen to turn away from it, to turn a blind eye to the whole thing."

Jenny's parents said they weren't aware of the advancements taken by the university and DEA until Tuesday's raid and arrests.

Since Jenny's death, her brother Nathan and sisters of Alpha Phi organized efforts to raise $104,000 for charity in her name.

Tulane University suspended its chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity amidst heated hazing allegations stemming from what police are calling an incident at the group's "Hell Night" initiation.

Two of the fraternity's pledges claim to have second- and third-degree burns after being doused with pepper spray and having hot water and crab boil poured on their bodies, police said.

Ten of Pi Kappa Alpha's brothers are facing felony battery charges from the incident that, if convicted, could lead to 15 years in jail, police said. The incident occurred April 25 at the fraternity's house, police added.

One of the pledges suffering burns was "obviously extremely traumatized" by the ritual, his attorney Frank D'Amico Jr., of New Orleans, told CNN.

The pledge bas badly burned on his chest, buttocks and genitals, D'Amico said. Brothers used boiling hot water that contained pepper spray and a "crab boil" seasoning mixture including cayenne pepper to haze the pledges, he added.

"What they were doing was burning the young men," D'Amico said.

UW-Madison Investigates Possible Fraternity Hazing Incident

Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Wisconsin poured buckets of vomit, urine and feces in what school officials are calling a possible case of hazing.

A student who is not in the fraternity told the university's student newspaper he saw Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers outside of their house on Saturday using the buckets full of vile to pour on one another. The stench of the buckets' contents could be smelled from across the street, he said.

University officials are attempting to determine if what happened was hazing or simply an act of pure stupidity, Associate Dean of Student Kevin Helmkamp told WISCTV.com.

The fraternity's alumni board called the incident "inappropriate" but said it has been assured the incident didn't involve hazing and that all those who participated did so voluntarily.

A man was caught creeping through two different bedrooms around 3:30 a.m. Friday at Northwestern University's Kappa Alpha Theta house, police said.

Stephen Manning, 24, of Evanston, Ill., was charged with trespassing and possession of cocaine after he was identified by sisters on video taken by the house's security cameras, police said.

Manning was seen on the third floor of the Theta house, police said. He was arrested last year for a similar act in another residence hall, but wasn't charged, reports said.

A Lambda Phi Epsilon brother at Binghamton University lost his life early Saturday morning in an off-campus car crash about two weeks before he planned to graduate.

Willie "Strobe" Poon, 22, of Staten Island, N.Y., had attended "Slope Day" at Cornell University before the accident, reports said.

He and four others were headed from Cornell back to campus before the one-car accident, reports said. The car's driver, Binghamton student Rolyden C. Liu, 20, was charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular homicide, police said.

Fraternity May Face Sanctions By University

Police are investigating accusations of a possible rape at an April party held by Phi Gamma Delta at the University of Georgia.

The woman said she woke up around 11 a.m. on April 20 on a couch at the fraternity's house without her underwear on, police said. She also found bruises on her hips and knees, police added.

The woman's roommate encouraged her to go to the hospital and police are still investigating as to whether a possible act of sexual assault may have occurred.

Reports said a punch concoction was served at the party that contained "a lot of vodka."

Police have arrested a man they say played a role in the murder of a 21-year-old brother of Sigma Pi at the University of California in Berkeley.

Andrew Thomas Hoeft-Edenfield, 20, admitted to fatally stabbed Christopher Wootton at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the rear parking lot of the university's Chi Omega sorority house, police said.

After quitting, she said a sister slammed her against a wall and threatened to slit her throat. Police are investigating the incident and in the meantime, reports said Ms. Holt has left the university in fear of her life.

Five pledges were said to be armed with sticks and tape and caught on camera jumping into a pit filled with small alligators, police said. They were charged April 17.

After the failed robbery, university administrators opened a hazing investigation and uncovered several odd activities practiced by Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

In one incident, brothers forced pledges to eat onions covered in hot sauce that was 200 time more spicier than a normal jalapeno pepper, Kenneth Dechmerowski, a former vice president of the fraternity said.

Frat Guy of the Week: TV and Movie Star Ashton Kutcher

Before taking a modeling gig that led to his casting on a TV show that went on to be one of the decade's most popular sitcoms, Ashton Kutcher lived it up as a Delta Chi brother at the University of Iowa.

Kutcher, who stars alongside Cameron Diaz in the new movie "What Happens in Vegas..." opening this week, was a biochemical engineering major and was kicked out of his apartment at Iowa before moving to Hollywood to pursue and acting career.

"I thought I knew everything but I didn't have a clue," Kutcher told Cosmopolitan magazine in a 2007 interview. "I was smoking a lot of weed and partying and I woke up many mornings not knowing what I had done the night before. I played way too hard. I am amazed I am not dead."

Kutcher was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He starred in school plays while doubling as a receiver on the football team at Clear-Creek Amana High School.

Kutcher has a fraternal twin brother, Micheal, who has cerebral palsy. Finding a cure for Michael was Kutcher's inspiration for studying science at Iowa, he said.

After modeling in advertisements for Calvin Klein and acting in a Pizza Hut commercial, Kutcher moved to Los Angeles and got his big break when he joined the cast of "That 70s Show," starring as goofball Michael Kelso.

Kutcher has gone on to marry actress Demi Moore, star in over a dozen movies and produce hit TV shows like MTV's Punk'd.

EVICTED WVU FRATS MUST CORRECT VIOLATIONS BEFORE MOVING BACK TO HOUSES

Four fraternities evicted from their chapters houses last spring at West Virginia University still aren't allowed to move back.

The university's Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Sigma were kicked out of their houses in May after officials found fire code violations, blocked entrances and exits and holes in ceilings.

Two statues valued at about $17,000 stolen from a local yacht club were found last week at the University of Alabama's Sigma Pi house, police said.

While brothers were home for winter break, a university employee was doing a routine inspection of the fraternity's house when she found the two statues first reported stolen sometime between Dec. 14 and 19 from the NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala., police said.

Four fraternities evicted from their chapters houses last spring at West Virginia University still aren't allowed to move back.

The university's Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Sigma were kicked out of their houses in May after officials found fire code violations, blocked entrances and exits and holes in ceilings.

Each fraternity was permitted to move back once it had each of the violations corrected, but all four are finding it difficult to raise enough money to help their cause.

Phi Delta Theta is planning to demolish its former house to build a new one, while Phi Kappa Sigma is working to complete a $3 million renovation before moving back in.

Phi Gamma Delta must repair over $500,000 in damages to parts of its chapter house that were in violation. The fraternity received 112 fire code violations before being forced to move out.

"It was never kept up from the 70s," Phi Gamma Delta President Julian Carvalho said. "Not having a central location has been a problem."

Brothers of Pi Kappa Phi are optimistic that by May they'll be able to move back in.

MSU Fraternity to Rebuild Ranks After Suspensions

Michigan State University's chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity lost all but four of its brothers last fall after a hazing investigation caused its national organization to suspend 11 of its members.

The brothers were placed on 5-to-8 year suspensions by the organization for their roles in the hazing and the remaining brothers now hope to move in a new direction on Jan. 21 when they hold their first recruitment meeting of the new year.

Details of the hazing incident from last fall were not released by the organization and the university said it is unaware of the circumstances that led to the suspensions of each brother.

UW Suspends Frat Over Alcohol

The University of Wyoming has suspended its chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity until January 2009 for violations committed in a September alcohol-related incident, campus administrators said.

Four of the chapter's brothers were suspended following the incident from the university, but were later reinstated after a state judge intervened.

The chapter was also suspended briefly as a campus organization in October after allegations that dangerous levels of alcohol were reportedly being used at the fraternity house.

The details of the fraternity's latest suspension have not been revealed by the university.

"The university is committed to working with Sigma Nu to make them an active organization on campus again," said Jessica Lowell, a university spokeswoman. "This agreement outlines the path we will take to get there."

MSU Frat Gets 14 Citations for Fire Code Violations

Michigan State University's chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity was cited in December after local firefighters found a plethora of fire code violations in their house.

Brothers had bags and paper plates taped over smoke detectors inside the house, warranting a total of 14 fire code violations, firefighters said.

"The connection between alcohol use, careless disposal of smoking materials, lack of sprinkler systems and tampering with alarms - it's just something that's extremely, extremely dangerous," said Bob Pratt, a fire marshal in East Lansinf, Mich., after dishing out the citations.

Northwest Missouri State University's administration punished its Delta Chi and Phi Sigma Kappa fraternities after members appeared at Halloween parties in blackface.

Two white males appeared in costume at separate parties, and photographs of the incidents made their way around campus. One man wore a green hooded sweatshirt and dreadlocks, depicting a man suspected of firing a gun in a campus parking lot on homecoming weekend.

Another man was pictured at a fraternity house party dressed as Michael Vick, the Atlanta Falcons quarterback who pleaded guilty to dogfighting charges.

Frat Guy of the Week: Dallas Cowboys' Owner Jerry Jones

Before he was calling the shots for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones was just another beer sluggin' frat guy at the University of Arkansas.

Raised in North Little Rock, Ark., Jones was a star runningback in high school and was awarded a football scholarship to play for the Razorbacks. At Arkansas, Jones joined Kappa Sigma fraternity and played alongside two men he would later hire to coach the Cowboys, Barry Swtizer and Jimmy Johnson.

After college, Jones made bank in an Oklahoma oil and gas exploration business and in 1989 bought the Cowboys.

Jones went on to win three Super Bowls in the 1990s with the team and remains the franchises owner today. He even made an appearance in the 1998 movie 'BASEketball' and also owns the Dallas Desperados, an Arena Football League team.

The Cowboys are sitting pretty in this year's playoffs, finishing the 2007 regular season with a 13-3 record and the top seed in the National Football Conference.

Following a series of hazing allegations, fraternities at both the University of Florida and University of Maryland have been sanctioned while investigations continue.

Florida's Alpha Tau Omega was placed on probation through the fall of 2008 after a response to allegations the fraternity held a late night "line up" in which pledges were forced to jump into a mud pit when incorrectly answering a question about the chapter's history.

Maryland's chapter of Zeta Beta Tau is facing disciplinary actions for hazing during its initiation ceremony. Pledges were placed in a circle and asked to name the fraternity's founders, the university's student newspaper reported.

In this case if the pledges answered incorrectly, water was dumped on their heads, the newspaper said. One pledge allegedly had 'Shout,' a stain remover used to clean laundry, poured on his head when he missed a founder's name.

"There were a lot of rumors flying around campus," Zeta Beta Tau's Executive Director Jonathan Yulish said. "(The pledge) wasn't blinded. He didn't have chemicals poured in his eye."

Maryland is investigating the chapter's hazing allegations, while its national headquarters has already sanctioned the brothers for violating its policies. The executive board members of the Zeta Beta Tau chapter were removed from their offices and placed on probation that will last through the entirety of their undergraduate careers.

In addition, the chapter must also pay for the hazing investigation and fund an anti-hazing brochure and speaker.

Alpha Tau Omega at Florida was also suspended from hosting social events through the spring of 2008 and each members must complete five hours of community service.

Phi Delta Theta's chapter at Penn State University could be on its way out after losing its recognition at the college and a suspension imposed by its national organization.

The fraternity violated its national alcohol policies and now could also lose its house. Chapter President Dave Dunn said the chapter has steady support from its alumni base, which will likely help the brothers keep the house while working temporarily as a local chapter without national backing.

An official from the fraternity's headquarters in October stopped by Phi Delta Theta's house and found students drinking alcoholic beverages, reports said. The fraternity and its national organization are supposed to be free of alcohol.

A George Washington University fraternity is being investigated for hazing after several of its pledges told campus administrators they feared for their well being as "hell week" approached.

Pledges reported through anonymous tip lines they believed they were being hazed by the brothers.

The university last week began investigating the accusations. Since then, three brothers have been suspended on hazing and drug violations and another was hospitalized after overdosing on sleeping pills.

University police have confiscated cell phones and computers in the ongoing investigation. Local police were also contacted by the university to look into violations of Washington, D.C.'s anti-gang laws.

While some pledges maintain that the accusations are legitimate and that they feared for their personal safety while going through the fraternity's pledge process, one says that's not the case.

"If I could start over and do it again from day one, I would," the pledge who asked to remain anonymous said.

Fraternity Activities Suspended

Ball State University's chapter of Delta Tau Delta was placed on immediate suspension by the fraternity's national headquarters after police recovered stolen items from Theta Chi in their house.

Two of the university's Delta Tau Delta brothers were charged by police with stealing paddles, trophies, composite photographs and a flag from the Theta Chi house.

Until further notice, Delta Tau Delta was suspended from participating in any social activities. Brothers are still permitted to hold chapter meeting, participate in intramural sports, the university's interfraternal council and honor board activities.

Charged for the thefts were Delta Tau Delta brothers Dustin Koch and James Finn. Both were released from county jail after posting bond.

The university is investigating if the fraternity should be held responsible for the actions of its members involved in the theft.

Frat Figure Coke Bust Suspect

A Delta Chi brother and former president of the University of Colorado's Interfraternity Council was caught with cocaine after a fight Friday outside the chapter's house, police said.

Christopher Kline, a fifth-semester senior at Colorado, had until October served as the university's IFC president. Another student had been jumped by two men outside the Delta Chi house, when Kline helped police get in touch with his chapter's president after the fight.

Police said Kline had been acting odd and his pupils were much larger than others around after the fight.

A small baggy police said was cocaine fell out of Kline's pocket. Kline had tried to kick it away and said it didn't belong to him, police said.

Kline was taken to county jail and later released, police said. He is set to appear in court Dec. 20 on the charges.

Multiple Underage Tickets Issued at Frat House Drinking Party

More than two dozen students face charges of underage drinking following a Saturday night party at Bradley University's Sigma Nu house.

Police raided the party and issued a total to 28 citations in all, they said.

The bust was part of an ongoing program to eliminate fun.

Frat Plans to Move

After a barrage of complaints filed against them to police and city officials, brothers of Western Michigan University's chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon say they plan to move.

"They're making it more painful to be here than to not be here,'' Tau Kappa Epsilon President Joel Rowden said.

Neighbors of the house and city officials say they are sick of the fraternity's raucous and borderline behavior. Police have cited the fraternity twice for noise violations.

Thirteen brothers live in the chapter's house. Tau Kappa Epsilon moved into the neighborhood this past summer and aren't yet sure when or where they'll move.

"We're civil individuals. We're all just college students. They make it sound like we're Satan's spawn,'' the fraternity's president said.

Fire Breaks Out at UM Sorority House

The University of Montana's Alpha Phi sorority house caught fire early Sunday morning, forcing its sisters to evacuate.

Firefighters said the blaze began at about 5 a.m. and sprinklers helped to contain flames from spreading.

No smoke was visible when firefighters arrived, but they said they did find flames in the house's basement.

An electrical malfunction is believed to be the cause, but the investigation remains open, firefighters said.

Clemson Freshman Found Dead After Sigma Nu Party

A freshman at Clesmson University was found dead Sunday morning after a party held at the college's Sigma Nu fraternity house.

Benjamin Sprague, 18, of Greenville, S.C., was found dead on a futon at the fraternity's off-campus house after attending a party there Saturday night, police said.

Sprague died of respiratory arrest, caused by acute alcohol intoxication, police said, adding they don't suspect foul play.

The campus' Sigma Nu chapter was placed on an interim suspension following the incident until a police and university investigation is complete.
