SAE Disbands at Memphis

SAE Resigns

As reported by the Frat Boy News staff and Kendall Jones, a staff writer for Memphis' Daily Helmsman:

The fraternity that was issued a two-year suspension after allegedly using racial slurs resigned as a student organization at The University of Memphis. Sigma Alpha Epsilon chose Friday to withdraw its appeal of the university's suspension and, by their choice, will no longer be recognized as a student organization.

"I was surprised," said Marshall Simpson, a former SAE pledge who brought the allegations against the fraternity. "I would have been happy if they accepted their punishment. If they feel that there was a need to resign, hopefully that's because they understand what they did."

When Simpson, who is white, brought his black girlfriend to a house party in September, some SAE members allegedly harassed him by calling her a "n-" and held a meeting in which they told him to not bring her back to the house. Simpson said the whole ordeal with SAE and the treatment of his girlfriend only made the couple's relationship stronger.

"Everybody makes mistakes, and they had a chance with the appeal to show The University a different side of them," said a university spokeswoman. "But since they resigned, that's not going to happen."

Because they are no longer a registered student organization, SAE will have to go through the application process to again be recognized by the university.

"By just resigning," the spokesperson said, "they are kind of giving up on the organization."
