M.I.T. Dean Resigns After Lying About Qualifications for 28 Years
Dean at M.I.T. Resigns Ending 28-year Lie
The Dean of Admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology spent the past 28-years on her life behind a mirage of fake credentials and academic degrees.
Marilee Jones lied about her college degrees when she first applied to work at the institute. Over time, it became next to impossible for her to rectify her lie.
“I misrepresented my academic degrees when I first applied to M.I.T. 28 years ago and did not have the courage to correct my résumé when I applied for my current job or at any time since,” Ms. Jones said in a statement posted on the M.I.T. Web site.
Ms. Jones had claimed to have received degrees from Albany Medical College, Union College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - a terrible lie. Ms. Jones admitted this week that she in fact, never actually earned a degree from any college, but lived the lie simply to land the job.
“I am deeply sorry for this and for disappointing so many in the M.I.T. community and beyond who supported me, believed in me, and who have given me extraordinary opportunities,” she concluded.
