A veteran Santa Clara police officer faces charges that he assaulted a college student whose motorized scooter woke up the off-duty cop.

47-year-old officer Dale Little has been charged with battery and assault by a public officer. The two charges are misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine.

He has been placed on paid administration leave while the Santa Clara Police Department investigates. Police Chief Stephen Lodge says the 21-year department veteran has no record of excessive force.

Little was off-duty around midnight February 6th when he woke up to the sound of noisy motorbikes and allegedly attacked the San Jose State University student.

Little told investigators that he grabbed the student and pushed him onto the hood of a police car, but denied striking him.
