Two people are in custody after a Central Michigan University student tried to run over two campus police officers who interrupted a burglary at a university store, authorities said.

One of the officers fired his gun "in self-defense" at the front of the student's Ford passenger car about 3:15 a.m. today in a parking lot on the north side of campus when the driver turned the car on the officer and his partner, university spokesman Steve Smith said.

No one was injured, and the car left the parking lot.

The officers had chased the driver, a 22-year-old Detroit man, on foot from the Bovee University Center. Police reported the man fled the center while they were investigating a break-in at the Microchips Computer Store, Smith said.

Isabella County sheriff's deputies arrested the driver and his passenger, a 22-year-old Detroit woman, after a traffic stop on River near Crawford. They found merchandise from the computer store in the vehicle and lodged the pair in the Isabella County Jail, where they remained Monday morning.
