UCCS Campus Police were tested Tuesday when an 18-year old brought what looked like a handgun into a UCCS gym.

It turned out to be a pellet gun, and police determined there was no threat, but with recent school shootings campus police say this was the ultimate way to test the system they have in place.

“We never thought anything like that could happen here, but then you see what happened at Virginia Tech and you think, that can happen anywhere,” said Sgt. Guy Thoms. Campus police say they reacted immediately, sending out an email within fifteen minutes warning of the situation. Some students say it’s not enough.

“I don't check my emails everyday, I'm way too busy,” said one student. UCCS police says they are now looking into a reverse 911 system.

“If there was an incident, students would be notified via text messaging or via a phone call,” said UCCS Police Chief Jim Spice.

The 18-year-old who brought the pellet gun on campus was charged with disorderly conduct.
