A University of North Carolina Wilmington student was robbed at gunpoint on campus Tuesday evening.
A man armed with a semi-automatic handgun demanded money from an undergraduate student as she stood near an ATM at the Warwick Center, said UNCW police Detective David Cook.
When the student replied that she hadn't taken out any money yet, the robber ripped a silver necklace from the victim's neck, Cook said.
The suspect fled in a dark blue, four-door, older model Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, Cook said. Both Wilmington police and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office have been alerted about the incident, he said.
The student told campus police that she was walking toward the money machine about 6:30 p.m. She told police she had pulled her wallet from her purse when she heard a noise behind her.
She turned around and saw a white male she described as older than college age and about 5-foot-8 with brown hair, messy facial hair and a goatee, and wearing a blue T-shirt under a gray hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, Cook said.
The victim told campus police the man didn't point the gun at her. Cook said video cameras at the Warwick Center might provide more clues about the robber.
The last armed robbery at UNCW was Nov. 17, 2006, Cook said. That case was closed with an arrest, he said.
