Illinois Mulling Ban of Frat House Smoking

Privately-Owned Fraternal Homes Could be Affected by Smoking Ban

Fraternities in Illinois are worried a smoking ban set to be enacted Jan. 1 by the state could extend to their privately-owned Greek houses.

"I think the department of health has more important concerns it should be dealing with,” Jonathan Shepler, Illinois State University's Interfraternity Council president told a local newspaper.

The state of Illinois is placing a ban on smoking in all public places. What the state hasn't made clear, however, is if the ban will include privately-owned fraternity houses. Smoking in university-owned houses is already out of the question.

A decision on the issue will be made in the weeks to come.
