Hofstra Girl Says Sorority Threatened Her After De-Pledging

A 19-year-old student at Hofstra University claims the sister of Phi Epsilon threatened her after she opted to de-pledge when learning of a bizarre initiation ritual.

Courtney Holt said Phi Epsilon wasn't "a sorority, it's a cult." Ms. Holt said she left the sorority after finding out she would have to be branded in her groin area with a hot fork before becoming a sister.

After quitting, she said a sister slammed her against a wall and threatened to slit her throat. Police are investigating the incident and in the meantime, reports said Ms. Holt has left the university in fear of her life.

Vehicle Break-Ins Plague Hofstra

A student reported on March 19 his vehicle parked near Enterprise Hall was keyed. Two days later, three radios were stolen from cars parked in the parking lot near C.V. Starr Hall. The next day, a student reported that he parked his vehicle near the Chemistry/Physics Building and returned to find damage on the driver's side of the car. On the 24th, a student reported the theft of her license plate while parked near Nassau/Suffolk Hall.

Break-ins, vandalization and hit-and-runs are a concern for students and faculty who park their vehicles on the University campus. Last week, the department of Public Safety distributed flyers on cars parked in south campus lots to notify drivers of several thefts that have occurred in recent weeks in the vicinity of C.V. Starr and Monroe Halls and the Butler Annex building.

Cars have been left unlocked or windows have been pried or smashed open by one or more thieves who take cars radios and other electronics.

In response to the concentration of thefts, Public Safety has increased security in the area. "We have more persons on patrol, both in uniform, motorized and in non-uniform," Ed Bracht, the director of Public Safety, said. "We've contacted Nassau County Police Department and they're giving us an assist also with daily patrol on their part, both uniformed and plain clothes."

Frat Guy of the Week: Jay Wright

As Frat Boy's everywhere are putting the finishing touches on their brackets for their pools, it only seems "Wright" that Villanova University's men's basketball coach Jay Wright is the Frat Guy of the Week.

Wright graduated in 1983 from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, where he was a brother of Sigma Chi fraternity. After college, Wright worked as an assistant at Hofstra and UNLV before being named Hofstra's head coach in 1994.

In 2001, Wright became the head coach of Villanova, and has led the Wildcats to the last 3 NCAA basketball tournaments. Villanova will take on Kentucky in the first round Friday.
