Fire Displaces Iowa State Sorority
Black smoke began pouring out of the 2nd and 3rd story windows Sunday night at Iowa State University's Alpha Chi Omega house.
Firefighters aren't yet sure what started the blaze. The 3rd floor of the house suffered the most damage and girls were temporarily relocated by the university to other housing.
Tri-Delta Sorority Not Impressed by 'Greek'
ABC Family's new hit summer series 'Greek' aims to portray the lives of typical fraternity and sorority members, but some are saying the show isn't nearly as realistic as it wants viewers to believe.
"The behavior depicted in 'Greek' happens in sororities as often as doctors look like McDreamy (of Grey's Anatomy," said Michelle Shimberg, international president of Delta Delta Delta sorority. The sorority released a statement immediately following the show's premiere earlier this month.
Frat guys around the country are echoing her sentiment.
"I don't like the image it portrays of the Greek community. It portrays what a stereotypical Greek house is," said Richard Reinhardt, a brother of Iowa State's Beta Sigma Psi chapter.
Iowa Gay Frat Helps Fight Blood Ban
Iowa State University's gay frat helped spearhead a mini-revolt against the school's blood drive. The school's Greeks typically encourage participation and even organize a Greek Week contest to see which fraternity or sorority can donate the vital fluid. Delta Lambda Phi, however, raised their voices against the ban on gay blood, insisting the Greeks should not compete in the discriminatory drive. Men who sleep with men have been barred from donating blood since 1977.
Of the protest, Delta Lambda Phi's faculty director, Warren Blumenfeld, said:
We've been trying to raise this issue for a long time. The Greek Week council has done something remarkable that we in the community have been trying to do - to raise the issue to the highest level of public discourse. They should be applauded for that.Not everyone's so pleased - a number of students say that by ending the traditional competition, Greek Week officials are depriving Iowa blood banks of approximately 500 bags of precious plasma.
