On the day when Meaghan Bosch's cause of death was made public, her father challenged university officials to do something about the drug problems on campus.

"The administration is either unwilling or has been incapable of addressing this issue, and we urge the administration of the university to radically change their approach to this problem," Joseph Bosch said at a Monday news conference held at Dallas Police headquarters.

He specifically mentioned the Greek system as a group with drug issues.

"Drugs are woven into the Greek system and the social fabric of the university," he said.

Bosch was the third SMU student to die during the past school year.

The Texas Rangers, who are assisting in the investigation into Bosch's death, said she died from an accidental overdoes of cocaine, methamphetamine and oxycodone. Oxycodone is used as a respiratory depressant, but can be addictive.

Sophomore Jacob "Jake" Stiles was found dead in his room in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house two days before final exams in the fall. The cause of his death was a lethal cocktail of expensive prescription pain killer fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol, according to a report from the Dallas County Medical Examiner.

First-year student Jordan Crist died from acute alcohol poisoning. He was found unconscious in a room on the third floor of Perkins Hall two days before final exams this spring. Crist had a blood alcohol level of 0.4 - five times the legal limit.

Missing Texas College Student Found Dead

The body of a Southern Methodist University female student who had been missing since last week was found Monday in a portable toilet near Waco, Texas.

The 21-year old student, Meaghan Bosch, was said to have had a cocaine problem by her parents. Construction workers found her body and police don't believe she experienced any sort of trauma but do think the body was placed there.

Bosch had last talked to her parents last Thursday and sent a text message to her ex-boyfriend that said she was at the home of a drug dealer. The cause of her death is being examined, police said.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon house at Southern Methodist University is certainly a sight to behold.

The SAE brothers moved into this nearly 20,000 square foot mansion in the fall of 2005. It features 29 rooms, and houses 46 brothers.

The three story building cost $3.5 million, and was built with over $1 million raised from alumni, and a $2 million dollar loan from SMU. It is certainly nice to see that level of commitment from alumni and the university.

Alpha Phi Alpha Pledge Gets Settlement for 2003 Hazing Case

SMU Fraternity Pledge Settles Suit on '03 Hazing

As reported by the Dallas Morning News:

A Southern Methodist University fraternity pledge who nearly died in a 2003 hazing incident has settled his lawsuit with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Braylon Curry sued the historically black fraternity and several members after being forced to chug gallons of water until he collapsed and nearly drowned in his own vomit. Settlement details are confidential and weren't released.

"He feels like he has justice," said his attorney, Mary Alice McLarty. "He was almost killed, and somebody was held accountable."

One fraternity member received 10 years' probation last year; others charged with aggravated assault are awaiting trial.

Fraternity House at SMU Evacuates

As reported by the staff of the Dallas Morning News:

A fraternity house at Southern Methodist University was evacuated Saturday morning due to a small fire in the heating system, a city official said.

Firefighters responded to the Sigma Chi house in the 3100 block of Binkley Avenue at 8:18 a.m., said University Park spokesman Steve Mace. Some lint may have gotten caught in a duct, he said.

The fire caused about $10,000 in damage, he said. No injuries were reported.

It was unclear how many people were in the house at the time of the fire, Mr. Mace said.

Independents Living in Old SMU Beta House

Beta House is Back...But Not With Frat Boys

It's enough to make any Frat guy nauseous... a fraternity house, its brothers evicted and in their place...independents.

This sad but true tale had been played out at Southern Methodist University. In December of 2005 Beta Theta Pi was shut down by their nationals in the aftermath of an incident that is neatly summarized in a police report:

"Officers responded to a fire alarm at the Beta Theta Pi house. Six students and two non-affiliated people in one of the rooms were smoking marijuana, which caused a smoke detector to activate."

After being vacant for nearly a year, the old Beta house was offered an option for students looking for housing for the spring of 2007. Apparently the house has some sweet perks to it
"The house has a basketball court, dining room, was remodeled recently, freshly painted and in really good shape...the house also features a lounge, a pool table and a kitchen".

Now instead of housing the Betas, it holds ten guys, all unaffiliated with any greek orgainzation. The new residents, unsurprisingly, seem to like it. "I was surprised and excited, because of the fact that it's a house so it has more space and is more comfortable....A lot more happens on this part of campus" said sophomore Rene Garcia.
