Frat Guy of the Week: Lou Holtz

Legendary college football coach and ESPN commentator Lou Holtz was a brother of Delta Upsilon fraternity while attending Kent State University.

Holtz would become the only coach in NCAA history to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to final top 20 rankings.

Holtz graduated from Kent State in 1959 and in 1960 become a graduate assistant football coach at the University of Iowa while working on his masters degree. Holtz' first head coaching job was at the College of William and Mary, before taking a job at North Carolina State University.

In 1976, Holtz tried his hand in the National Football League with the New York Jets, before returning to the college football ranks a year later at the University of Arkansas. He later became head coach at the University of Minnesota before landing one of the most prestigious jobs in the game at the University of Notre Dame.

Holtz led Notra Dame to a national championship win in 1987 over West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. The coach led the Fighting Irish to nine straight bowl games before retiring from the helm after the 1996 season.

He returned to coaching in 1999 with South Carolina, before retiring for good following the 2004 season.

Since then, Holtz has worked as an analyst and commentator with ESPN alongside Rece Davis and Mark May.

South Carolina Police Bust Chi Psi Party

69 at Party Face Alcohol Charges

Police busted a party Thursday at the University of South Carolina's Chi Psi house and charged 69 people with underage drinking.

The students were arrested by sheriff's deputies working with an alcohol enforcement team, police said.

It is not yet known if the university will take any action against the fraternity for the party leading to the arrests.

South Carolina Coach Blasts University Admissions

University of South Carolina

Coach Steve Spurrier blasted the school's admissions process, apologizing to two recruits who signed with the Gamecocks in the winter and were denied academic entry this summer.

"In my opinion, I still believe we made a mistake," Spurrier said.

Spurrier had spoken with university president Andrew Sorensen and the two agreed, the coach said, that things needed to change. Spurrier was angered that receiver Michael Bowman of Wadesboro, N.C., and Arkee Smith of Jacksonville, Fla., were cleared by the NCAA to enroll, yet were turned down by the university. The rest of the Gamecocks football team officially reported Friday for preseason camp.

University of Florida

Running back Brandon James pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, was placed on six months of probation and received community service. Coach Urban Meyer suspended James from the Sept. 1 season opener against Western Kentucky.

University of Wisconsin

Sophomore running back Lance Smith, who was charged with battery and disorderly conduct a month ago, was reinstated to the team.

South Carolina's Delta Sigma Theta Releases 55 Luft Balloons

Sorority to Celebrate by Releasing Red BalloonsTo celebrate the 55th anniversary of their sorority, the University of South Carolina's Delta Sigma Theta blew up 55 balloons.

The girls just didn't blow. When they were finished blowing, they brought the balloons to the rooftop of a building on campus and released them into the air.

"We decided to mark this memorable event with a balloon release," Delta Sigma Theta sister Francine Cayruth told a South Caroline newspaper. "We want the community to know when they see the red balloons in the sky what it is all about."

Ex South Carolina Phi Beta Sigma Pledge Files Lawsuit

Student Sues Fraternity, USC Over Hazing Incident

An ex-pledge of the University of South Carolina's Phi Beta Sigma fraternity is suing eight brothers, the frat and the college for an extreme case of hazing last October when he said he was beat with baseball bats, belts, paddles, shoes, fists and pots and pans.

Terry Lyvotte Hall, Jr., 20, said he suffered head and arm injuries from the beatings and was hospitalized for nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Phi Beta Sigma was suspended last October after the hazing took place. The brothers involved could face a year in prison and a $500 fine if convicted.

Third Frat Boy Says Borat Tricked Us

Three University of South Carolina fraternity brothers said they were tricked by actor Sascha Baron Cohen into appearing in last year's hit film 'Borat.' While two of the brothers took it as far as suing the movie studio last fall, another just laughed it off and enjoyed the exposure.

"They fibbed a little bit. They went so far as to say that he ['Borat' actor Cohen] was a real reporter from Kazakhstan. … I think they said it would be broken up into six television specials, and that it would never be shown in the United States," David Corcoran told ABC News.

Corcoran said he was paid $200 to drink with Borat in a scene which the three brothers from an unnamed fraternity made racist comments and appeared drunk.

The two other students are suing 20th Century Fox, the studio that released "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," for trickery.

Seven USC Students Charged in 2006 Hazing Incident

Seven brothers of the University of South Carolina's chapter of Phi Beta Sigma have been charged in connection with an October hazing event as part of an off-campus initiation.

The brothers charged were said to have strangled a pledge with a t-shirt, and then hit him multiple times with a wooden paddle, belt and steel bat. Police also said the pledge was punched more than 100 times in the initiation.

The brother facing charges are Brandon Jerraud Barnes, 21, of Columbia; Brandon Jamal Bomar, 23, of Woodruff; Brandon Elijah Bradley, 22, of Dalzell; Peter Christopher Gaskins, 22, of Lake City; William Levern Henryhand, 21, of Lake City; Travis Reuben Sheffield, 24, of Georgetown; and Larry Bernard Singleton, Jr., 22, of North Charleston.
