Frat Celebrating Cinco de Mayo All Week

Campus Fraternity Holds Week-long Cinco De Mayo Celebration

Gamma Zeta Alpha fraternity at San Jose State University is celebrating Cinco de Mayo all week long, but instead of parties they're teaching people about Latino culture.

Each year, Cinco de Mayo marks Mexico's victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. Many Mexicans view the holiday as a sign of patriotism and unity for the country.

"When Mexico fought the battle against the French, they were outnumbered but they won," said Timothy Chaparro, a San Jose State student.

"Cinco de Mayo was one of the many struggles Mexicans have had to deal with," Garcia said, "and Latinos unite around this time to deal with other struggles, such as the fight for immigration rights."

The fraternity set up events all week, including a Mariachi band and folk dances. Other fraternities will be honoring Lation history with kegs of Corona Saturday.
