Local Frat Finalizes Deal for New House
Disaffiliated Fraternity Finalizes Housing Deal
Alpha Pi Tau, a local fraternity at Keene State College in New Hampshire, has secured housing for its chapter. They plan on moving in by June 2007.
The fraternity, which has not had a house since last year, purchased the house near campus for $231,000. They used the proceeds from the sale of their old house, which was sold to the college to make way for a parking lot.
While the house is relatively modest, it is enough for the fraternity, which plans on six men living in the house.
"It's not like a huge fraternity house," said senior Matt Slowik, president, "It won't be a party house, just a place for us to live."
The fraternity has not been affiliated with the college since 2003. However, it remains active on campus and hopes to re-affiliate eventually. Unfortunately, the college is requiring all Greek organizations have a national counterpart starting in 2008.
One option for the chapter is to merge with a national fraternity, but Slowik dismissed this possibility, based on the chapter history at the school.
"Unfortunately we are not going to give up our letters to do that. In the eyes of other Greeks we are as equal as they are," he said.
