Getting one’s car washed is usually just a boring errand. Friday evening, though, the entire Virginia Tech football team will be gathered just outside Lane Stadium, ready to wash the car of anyone who drops by.

“It will involve all 105 players and the coaches, so we should be able to wash a lot of cars out there,” said John Ballein, the football team’s assistant athletic director.

There is no charge to have a car washed, but donations will be accepted, and the money raised will go toward a cause personal to the Tech community.

“The goal of the car wash is to raise money for the Hokie Spirit Fund,” Ballein said.

The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, in the parking lot next to the softball field, right behind Lane Stadium on Tech’s campus.

The football team has never done anything like this before, according to the athletic department, making it an unusual event for the football players who began practicing last week for the fall football season.

“It was actually Coach Beamer’s idea,” Ballein said.

The Hokie Spirit Fund now stands at around 7.1 million, supported by donations from across the world.

“I think that it is great that the football team is really stepping up to support the Hokies that we lost this past April,” said Student Government Association president Adeel Khan.

“I think they will be a great source of strength in our community this fall semester. I will certainly be in attendance and I everyone truly enjoy and be proud of the team showing their support for the community.”
