More than 200 marijuana plants and about three pounds of packaged marijuana -- ready to smoke -- was seized Thursday when Alameda police uncovered a pot-growing operation near San Jose State University.

Inside the detached garage, which was behind a single-family residence, police also allegedly found a heating and watering system for the plants.

The 230 plants measured from a few inches to at least 4 feet tall.

"I would not call it a sophisticated operation," said a narcotics officer, who asked that his name not be disclosed. "But it was very well organized. Everything was in its place."

Along with marijuana, police found about $9,000 in cash at the residence in the 3200 block of Garfield Avenue, plus a .22 caliber handgun.
