Illinois guard Jamar Smith will sit out next season following a drunken-driving conviction.

Coach Bruce Weber said Wednesday Smith will redshirt and rejoin the team next fall as a junior if he meets unspecified obligations.

"He's in the process of meeting his legal obligations while continuing to work on his personal issues," Weber said in a statement. "We feel at this time it's in Jamar's best interest that he sit out the 2007-08 season."

Smith, a 6-foot-3 guard from Peoria, pleaded guilty in May to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and 24 months of probation.

Authorities say Smith and teammate Brian Carlwell drank tequila and beer before getting into a crash last February. Smith, who allegedly believed Carlwell was dead, left the accident scene and drove the damaged car back to his apartment, authorities said.

The accident left Carlwell hospitalized for four days with a severe concussion

Smith, then too young to drink legally, had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the state's legal limit of .08.

Neither Smith nor Carlwell played after the accident.

Smith, now 21, averaged 8.1 points in 21 games, starting six. He was the Illini's top 3-point threat before the accident. He could not be reached Wednesday for comment.

Assistant to Succeed Prosser at Wake Forest

Wake Forest University promoted assistant basketball coach Dino Gaudio to replace Skip Prosser, who died two weeks ago.

Gaudio, 50, has been Wake Forest's associate coach since the 2002 season, and had worked on an off with Prosser for more than 25 years. It will be his first head-coaching position since he led Loyola of Maryland, in 2000.

"I love Skip Prosser and to become the head coach under these circumstances is not what I had envisioned,'' Gaudio said in a statement. "But I am also thrilled that I have been entrusted with the future of Deacon basketball.''

Prosser died July 26 at the age of 56 from an apparent heart attack after jogging at Wake Forest's Winston-Salem, North Carolina, campus.

Gaudio's association with Prosser began in 1981 at a high school in West Virginia, where was an assistant on Prosser's staff. Prosser left in 1985 to be an assistant under Pat Gillen at Xavier University, and Gaudio joined him two years later.

Kansas State basketball player Luis Colon was arrested Thursday and charged with simple battery, K-State campus Police Chief Ronnie Grice said Friday.

Colon, a sophomore, allegedly punched a fellow student on campus.

Grice said Colon was handcuffed and given a notice to appear. Grice said the arresting officer had the option of presenting Colon a notice to appear or take him to jail, but because there was no apparent serious injury as a result of the alleged punch, he only was given the notice to appear.

K-State assistant sports information director Tom Gilbert said coach Frank Martin was recruiting and not available for comment. Gilbert, though, said Martin was aware of the situation.

“Coach Martin is still gathering all the facts of this incident, and says he will let the judicial process run its course before handling the incident as an internal team matter,” Gilbert said.

Colon, a 6-10 sophomore, played in 29 games last season, and made 16 starts. He averaged 2.0 points and 1.8 rebounds. He was forced to miss a game in December, serving an NCAA-mandated one-game suspension for striking California freshman Taylor Harrison from behind in a game Nov. 29 in Berkeley, Calif.
