Ducks Rescued at Carnegie Mellon

It didn't take rocket science -- or computer science -- to rescue seven baby ducks that fell through a sewer grate on the Carnegie Mellon University campus Monday night.

It did take ingenuity and a lot of patience on the part of two campus police officers and three security guards who spent 90 minutes rolling in the mud to reunite the mallard ducklings with their mother.

A Carnegie Mellon student alerted officials to the problem at 9:30 p.m.

When an adult mallard and 12 very small yellow and black ducklings walked across a sewer grate, seven fell in. Campus police and security officers removed the metal grate, but could not reach the ducklings, that were 10 feet below ground level.

Campus officers devised a low-tech solution that included a bucket and long piece of rope. That part was easy. The hard part was getting the ducklings into the bucket.

Carnegie Mellon University's Delta Upsilon fraternity won't be renewing its lease at its current house for next year in the campus Greek quadrangle. Instead, the ladies of Delta Gamma will be taking their place.

The final decision was made the the university's director of Campus Services, who approached the Panhellenic Council to help decide who would be next to move in.

“It just made the most sense since [Delta Gamma was] already planning on expanding,” said Kerra Doyle, current Panhellenic Council president.

Delta Upsilon originally lost their lease for the 2005-06 year due to an underage drinking violation, but was allowed to return this year. The report didn't say if the chapter has planned an alternative housing situation.

CMU Allows Men, Women to Share Rooms

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh plans to take a new approach to co-ed campus housing by allowing members of the opposite sex to room with one another.

Several officials at the college have had the idea for a few years now, but it is finally being put into action as what they call "gender neutral housing." At first, only one building with about 25 apartments will try the new concept, but with enough intrest officials said those numbers could rise.

Only sophomores and higher level students are being permitted to try the new idea, and are welcome to sign up when they register for fall housing in the coming weeks.

"Do I think it's the wave of the future? Hard to tell. That's why we want to do a pilot to find out what our students want," said an official from the university. "I think it will fill a niche. But I don't think it will be huge."
