The son of former vice-president Al Gore pleaded guilty on Monday to possessing marijuana and other drugs, and was sentenced to an 18-month stint in a drug diversion program.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Jacob Jager said that the plea would be withdrawn and the charges expunged if Gore completes the program.

Al Gore III, 24, was pulled over by police July 4 for allegedly speeding at more than 160km/h on a Los Angeles area highway in a Toyota Prius. After searching the car, deputies said they discovered a small amount of marijuana and a variety of medications like Xanax and Valium for which he had no prescription.

Gore pleaded guilty to two felony counts of drug possession, two counts of drug possession without a prescription and one count of marijuana possession, the district attorney's office said.

Gore, the youngest of Al and Tipper Gore's four children, was previously arrested for marijuana possession in Maryland in 2003 when he was a student at Harvard University. Gore completed substance abuse counselling to settle those charges.

Albert Gore III, the son of former vice president Al Gore, was arrested Wednesday on charges of drug possession in California.

Gore, 24, was allegedly driving a blue Toyota Prius south on the San Diego (5) Freeway about 100 mph about 2:15 a.m. when a sheriff's deputy stopped him at the Crown Valley Parkway exit, said Jim Amormino of the Sheriff's Department.

The deputy detected the smell of alleged marijuana, and a search of the car turned up less than an ounce of suspected pot, along with prescription drugs including Valium, Xanax, Vicadin and Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit disorder, Amormino said.

Gore, a 2005 graduate of Harvard University was arrested on suspicion of drug possession and booked into the Inmate Reception Center in Santa Ana on $20,000 bail, and the Prius was towed and stored, according to Amormino.

This is the second time that Gore has been arrested on drug charges. In Dec. 19, 2003, the youngest Gore and two others were arrested near Washington when an officer pulled them over driving without their headlights on.

The officer smelled marijuana and noticed the windows of the car were open despite frigid temperatures. A search of the car turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box containing suspected marijuana and a crushed soda can that smelled like marijuana.

Gore was charged with marijuana possession, as were the two passengers in the car, Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass. All three released before the trial.

The judge that presided over Gore's marijuana possession case said that Gore will have to complete a substance abuse program. Montgomery County District Court Judge Mary McCormick put Albert Gore III's case on an inactive docket for a year, at which point the case was dropped when Gore met certain requirements.

Those requirements included submitting to 12 weeks of urine testing, community service and substance abuse counseling sessions. Gore also couldn't have a criminal conviction during that year.

If you happened to log on the Internet networking site Facebook Wednesday, you may have noticed things are a little bit different than they were the day before.

Facebook unveiled its latest redesign of the global social networking tool Wednesday to its more than 19 million users. The redesign isn't much of an overhaul, so to speak, but it makes networking through the site much easier and vastly more comprehensive.

"There's always room for improvement," said Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook's biggest competitor, MySpace, sold to News Corp. in late 2005 for about $580 million, something Zuckerberg promises not to do.

When Yahoo tried to purchase Facebook last year, Zuckerberg, a Harvard University dropout, resisted selling his brainchild.

Facebook tested the new design with about 100,000 users before it was released. When the "Bible" made its last set of improvement last Fall, introducing its "Newsfeed" feature, thousands of users objected to the change, citing that it added an unnecessary "stalker-esque" mentality to the site.

Although originally created to bring college students together, Facebook eventually allowed anyone to join. Today, Zuckeberg says less than half of "Bible" users are college students.

Students at Harvard University have formed a group promoting abstinence among students.

The group, called True Love Revolution, has recruited over 90 members via their Facebook group. Formed by Sarah Kinsella and Justin Murray, the students decided it was time to fight back against the casual sex culture at the Ivy League university, which even has a student run pornographic magazine.

"Sometimes that voice on campus is so overwhelming that students committed to abstinence almost feel compelled to abandon their convictions," Murray said. He acknowledged he "slipped up" and had sex earlier in college but said he has returned to abstinence with Kinsella.

The 'S' in Harvard Stands for 'Sex'

Life is pretty tough for abstainers. As if dealing with Harvard’s debaucherous social scene weren’t enough, recently they were also faced with a non-mandatory workshop on sexual well-being. Will it ever end?

Well, if some campus conservatives have their way, it will. The college-sponsored event “Hooking Up at Harvard” has some students decrying what they view as shameless promotion of premarital sex by the college administration.

Of course, any time sex comes up, some Victorian sensibilities might be offended. But the only real difference between “Hooking Up” and any other wellness event is the titillating topic.

The college is in the business of promoting the wellbeing of students and, as Susan B. Marine, director of the Women’s Center, wrote in an e-mail to a concerned student, “Access to information about sexual health, decision-making, and well-being is an integral part of adulthood, and our role as educators is to enable all students who wish to learn about their own development to have access to accurate, meaningful information.”

While a college event promoting one side of a controversial political topic would be inappropriate, “Hooking Up at Harvard” didn’t espouse an ideology; it simply provided information. The tagline of the program explicitly includes our “Future” sex lives, making it clear that the event’s organizers did not believe that every student is, or should be, having sex. At the event itself, Madison tried to dispel the stigma associated with virginity, and emphasized good choices rather than promiscuity. If the idea of someone talking about (gasp) anal sex in public still bothers you, then I’m pleased to inform you that you don’t have to attend.

While it may come as a surprise, there are students at Harvard who want to have sex. We shouldn’t deny them the opportunity of learning about sexual well-being just because the mere mention of the topic offends a few delicate souls.
