Frat Brat Going to Jail for Hate Crimes

A brother of Delta Chi fraternity and student at California State University in Fullerton pleaded guilty last week to two felony hate crimes for assaulting to women in 2005 he thought to be a lesbian couple.

Gaston Alejandro Gastelum originally refuted the charges in December, saying the two woman had attacked him. Gastelum, who calls himself "Party Boy" on his MySpace profile, admitted last week to being ashamed for his actions, an OC Weekly report said.

Police said Gastelum was drunk when he yelled at the women, saying "You look like boys. You must be lesbians! Bitches! Fucking dykes!," the report said. He then punched the women in their faces, necks and chests before running away.

Facebook Gets Facelift

If you happened to log on the Internet networking site Facebook Wednesday, you may have noticed things are a little bit different than they were the day before.

Facebook unveiled its latest redesign of the global social networking tool Wednesday to its more than 19 million users. The redesign isn't much of an overhaul, so to speak, but it makes networking through the site much easier and vastly more comprehensive.

"There's always room for improvement," said Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook's biggest competitor, MySpace, sold to News Corp. in late 2005 for about $580 million, something Zuckerberg promises not to do.

When Yahoo tried to purchase Facebook last year, Zuckerberg, a Harvard University dropout, resisted selling his brainchild.

Facebook tested the new design with about 100,000 users before it was released. When the "Bible" made its last set of improvement last Fall, introducing its "Newsfeed" feature, thousands of users objected to the change, citing that it added an unnecessary "stalker-esque" mentality to the site.

Although originally created to bring college students together, Facebook eventually allowed anyone to join. Today, Zuckeberg says less than half of "Bible" users are college students.

Fraternity Investigates MySpace Posts

Leaders of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Michigan at Flint have written a letter of apology and say they will investigate chapter members who ran an online group that was perceived as racist.

The controversial site, “2nd Floor UCEN, We’re Takin’ It Back,” called on people to “take back” the second floor of the campus’s University Center. A cultural lounge there is a popular gathering place for black students. While several students told the newspaper that they disregarded the comments, others said they were offended by negative stereotypes used on the site.

The site was apparently posted in the fall but taken down within the past month. The fraternity’s apology is scheduled to appear in the student newspaper, The Michigan Times, on Monday.
