Record Numbers of Freshmen Girls Rushing Sororities

Freshmen girls at colleges around the nation are rushing sororities at record numbers.

“There is a higher number of freshmen this year and when freshmen enrollment goes up, then usually so does recruitment numbers,” said Anita Corey, Washington State University's director of the Center of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

"It was a stressful but very good experience," said Caitlin Burns, a Kansas State University freshman who got a bid from Sigma Kappa. "I'm glad I did it even though I didn't get my first preference. It's going good so far."

Even girls with disabilities are getting in on the action.

"I was worried they wouldn't accept me," said Ashley Wagner, a quadriplegic girl who got a bid from Kansas State's chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

"I obviously can't get upstairs, so they carried me up themselves on bid day, which was really nice," she said.

Utah Kappa Kappa Gamma House Vandalized

Sorority House Vandalized

Only hours after the ladies of the University of Utah's chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma finished painting their house earlier this month, the house was vandalized with blue paint splattered all over the freshly-painted walls.

"It's a horrific act and we're saddened that this has happened," said Christine Angstman, the chapter's president. "We're grateful that no one was hurt -- at least it can all be fixed."

Police said their weren't any signs of forced entry and that blue paint was smeared on walls and hallways throughout the house.

It's hard to believe the tragedy at Virginia Tech will have happened a week ago come Monday morning.

After the most-devastating campus shooting in American history, it only seems appropriate for the Frat Boy News to take a look back at some of the young Greek men and women who's lives unfortunately came to an abrupt and all-too tragic end last week.

Maxine Turner, 22, senior.
Maxine was one of the founders of Alpha Omega Epsilon, a national engineering sorority.

Mary Karen Read, 19, freshman.
Mary Karen had hoped to one day join a sorority and teach math and science to elementary school students.

Kevin Granata, 45, engineering professor.
Upon hearing a commotion from his office on the third floor of Norris Hall, the professor brought 20 students from a nearby classroom into his office, where the door could be locked. He and another professor, Wally Grant, then went downstairs to investigate the situation. They were both shot by Seung-hui Cho; Grant was wounded and survived, but Granata died from his injuries. None of the students locked in Granata's office were injured.

Caitlin Hammaren, 19, sophomore.
Caitlin was a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

He was a brother of Triangle Fraternity, and was inducted at Ohio State University.

Pipe Burst at Kansas State Kappa House Causes $30,000 in Damage

Burst Pipe Damages Sorority House

A bursting sprinkler pipe caused about $30,000 in damage at Kansas State University's Kappa Kappa Gamma house.

Junior Kappa Anessa Burgess discovered the burst pipe when she returned to the house Saturday after spring break.

"I heard a little buzzing noise while I was putting some clothes in my closet," Burgess said. "I looked up, but it wasn't the fire alarm. All of the sudden, black water started gushing out of a pipe in the ceiling of my closet. I screamed and started trying to move things out of the room."

"There were computers, a DVD player, printers, and iPods in the room, but even worse, we lost personal items like my grandmother's yarn," she said. "She gave it to me before she died, and I was using it to make a blanket for my dad. There are things like my yarn or pictures that you can't really replace."
