Frat Suspended in Anti-Semitic Harassment

An anti-Semitic harassment incident has resulted in the 5-year suspension of a prominent fraternity at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Sigma Phi Epsilon faced a 10-year, virtual death sentence suspension for the incident earlier this year.

At issue, was an alleged verbal altercation and anti-Semitic remarks with a mainly Jewish NIU fraternity.

This week, the NIU Judicial Hearing Board found the fraternity responsible for harassment, imposed a 5-year suspension, a small fine, 2 years probation once the suspension ends and ordered members to attend civility classes.

NIU Student Affairs Vice President Brian Hemphill called it a sad day for the NIU Greek community. A Sig Ep spokesman tells WBBM they will appeal.

Demetrius Jones was clear: "I don't want to talk about Notre Dame anymore," he said Monday.

But because Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis has talked about his former quarterback, who is enrolled at Northern Illinois, Jones felt compelled to talk at least a bit about Notre Dame.

Weis' implication in comments after Saturday's 38-0 loss to Michigan was unmistakable: He didn't know Jones was leaving Notre Dame, and Jones left the Irish in a lurch. Jones acknowledged in comments Sunday to the South Bend Tribune that he had been a little "immature" in the process.

Jones told the paper he was "stung" by Weis' comments that freshman Jimmy Clausen was the Irish's top quarterback and would have been the opening-game starter if he had recovered more quickly from surgery to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow.

"When I heard Jimmy was number one all the way through spring and that the only thing keeping him out of the lineup was his surgery, well, that's not what I was led to believe going into the summer," Jones said. "I thought I was getting a chance because Coach Weis believed in me. Then I didn't know what to believe anymore."

Errol Janusz, a brother of Phi Kappa Sigma at Northern Illinois, turned his Skull house room into bar for him and his friends.

"I built the bar at the beginning of the year," Janusz, a senior, said. "As for the entertainment center, I plead the fifth. It’s built out of cinderblocks and doors. I have to have something college-esque in here; it might as well be the entertainment center."

In addition, the room features a large leather sofa, cushy sofa bed and a 27-inch television among a large assortment of beer signs, and mirrors on the ceiling.

Black Frat Vying for Official Status

Phi Rho Eta, a traditionally national black fraternity and one of the "Divine Nine," hopes to leave an impression on the campus of Northern Illinois University.

"The members at NIU sought out Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc. for membership," said Jamil Johnson, national membership chair of Phi Rho Eta Fraternity, Inc. "The members will be supportive of all the Greek councils and their programs and we look forward to working with them."

"It is new and different," said Derrell Brown, a sophomore public health major. "I wanted to be a part of history."

"The fraternity concentrates on community development, which is good for me, because I want to be a teacher or a coach," said Mike Anderson, a sophomore physical education major. "The fraternity is beneficial for me now and for later."
