Wisconsin Sig Eps Used Buckets of Urine, Feces and Puke in Hazing, Student Says

UW-Madison Investigates Possible Fraternity Hazing Incident

Brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Wisconsin poured buckets of vomit, urine and feces in what school officials are calling a possible case of hazing.

A student who is not in the fraternity told the university's student newspaper he saw Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers outside of their house on Saturday using the buckets full of vile to pour on one another. The stench of the buckets' contents could be smelled from across the street, he said.

University officials are attempting to determine if what happened was hazing or simply an act of pure stupidity, Associate Dean of Student Kevin Helmkamp told WISCTV.com.

The fraternity's alumni board called the incident "inappropriate" but said it has been assured the incident didn't involve hazing and that all those who participated did so voluntarily.

Northern Illinois Frat Suspended 5 Years

Frat Suspended in Anti-Semitic Harassment

As reported by WBBM

An anti-Semitic harassment incident has resulted in the 5-year suspension of a prominent fraternity at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

Sigma Phi Epsilon faced a 10-year, virtual death sentence suspension for the incident earlier this year.

At issue, was an alleged verbal altercation and anti-Semitic remarks with a mainly Jewish NIU fraternity.

This week, the NIU Judicial Hearing Board found the fraternity responsible for harassment, imposed a 5-year suspension, a small fine, 2 years probation once the suspension ends and ordered members to attend civility classes.

NIU Student Affairs Vice President Brian Hemphill called it a sad day for the NIU Greek community. A Sig Ep spokesman tells WBBM they will appeal.

FGCU Greeks Hoping to Change Image

FGCU Seeks to Redefine Public Image of Fraternities, Sororities

The fraternities and sororities at Florida Gulf Coast University are hoping to change the public image its Greeks have on campus.

"We are definitely breaking down some barriers," Jon Forbes, president of the university's chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon, told Naples Daily News. "Looking from where I was at as a freshman to where I am now, I couldn’t have done it without Sig Ep."

Almost 10,000 students are enrolled at the university, its highest student population to date. As numbers have risen on campus, national fraternities and sororities have been hoping to set up new chapters, but the university has set limitations on those groups.

Currently the campus only has three fraternities and two sororities, with another set to begin recruitment this spring.

The fraternities hope to use leadership and involvement as ways to recruit new members, rather than promoting a party and social atmosphere.

Mizzou Sig Eps Eliminate Pledging

Fraternity Eliminates Pledging

By Patrick W. Connelly

Brothers of the University of Missouri's chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon have abolished pledging in favor of a program initiated by its national headquarters.

"We had a definite consensus that we needed to go in a new direction," the chapter's president Keith Ziercher told a Missouri newspaper. "Recruitment hadn’t been going well for a few years. We just needed to change."

Rather than pledging, the chapter chose to adopt the "Balanced Man" program for its new members, which will focus on their growth and development. The program was developed by the fraternity's national organization in the 1990s, based on ancient Greek philosophy of a sound mind and body.

About 78 percent of Sigma Phi Epsilon chapters use the program, which has propelled the fraternity to become the nation's largest in its total number of undergraduate brothers.

As part of the plan, the Missouri chapter will also take a look at standardized test scores, grades, character and campus involvement when rushing new members, they said.

"We're trying to change the image of the fraternity system," said John Hartman, the chapter's alumni advisor. "We don’t want that frat boy, ‘Animal House’ image. We want our fraternity to produce leaders."

Pittsburg State Student Charged with BB Gun Assault

As reported by Sanguine et Purpure - The Unofficial Sig Ep Blog

By Greg Grisolano

A Pittsburg State University student has been charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property.

Police arrested Aaron Plumley, 25, of Pittsburg, on Monday night after members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity called 911 to report shots being fired at the fraternity house at South Broadway and Ford Street. More than half a dozen officers from campus police, the Pittsburg Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department responded.

Pittsburg police Maj. Brent Narges said a BB rifle was recovered and seized as evidence. No injuries were reported, but some windows at the fraternity house were damaged, authorities said.

Plumley, a freshman at PSU and a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, also was charged with obstruction of justice and criminal discharge of a firearm. He was taken to the Crawford County Jail in Girard and was released at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday after posting $16,500 bond.

Steven Barker, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said the members of his fraternity do not have a problem with any other fraternities.

“The property damage isn’t my concern,” he said. “I’m concerned with the safety of the people at my house. Whether it’s a BB gun or a high-powered rifle, something could’ve happened, and we don’t appreciate it.”

Purdue's Frat GPA Falling

Overall Frat GPA Drops Below All-Male Average

According to a report from Purdue University's IFC, the GPA of current frat recognized on campus has fallen a bit from 2.727 to 2.717, lower than the all-male average.

Purdue's student newspaper cites the exclusion of suspended and probated fraternities for causing the average fraternity grade point average to drop.
Frats that are suspended or on probation like Sigma Phi Epsilon and Tau Kappa Epsilon were left out of the report.

"I am disappointed in the overall fraternity average, but I am anticipating an improvement," said Purdue's IFC president. Sororities on the campus reportedly have a collective average of 3.101.

A Toast To Double Standards

The Frat Boy News Daily College Column
By Chelsea Jo Simpson, staff columnist, The University of Arizona's Daily Wildcat

Congratulations, UA. You can drink yourselves senseless, pass out in the middle of the street and wait for the police department to come by. And when they do, go ahead and mutter any combination of Greek letters that you can think of. If you get "pi" in there, that's five fraternities. So drink up, and don't you worry about it - Greek Life will take the heat.

Last week, the Daily Wildcat ran the article titled "Seven fraternities, one sorority on probation for alcohol violations," listing the greek organizations that were supposedly under probation and the duration of the probation. If the student body is so interested in the alcoholic consumption of students and the ramifications they face for it, why don't we go ahead and list the sports teams, residence halls and clubs on campus who have any alcohol violations?

And while we're at it, let's just turn the front page into a weekly list of all students who are cited for minors in possession, their major and how long they have to pay their fine.

I really don't understand the utter fascination with Greek Life that provokes such constant scrutiny. Fraternities and sororities are constantly being watched; it's as if everyone is waiting for them to mess up. And let's be honest, this is college: Students are going to mess up regardless of whether or not they have Greek letters across their chest.

I'm not saying that fraternities should be free of all responsibility, but they aren't the root cause of the downfall of society, either. And more importantly, they are not responsible for the individual choices of students. If a student drinks himself - or herself - unconscious, whose fault is that?

Blaming the fraternity doesn't make sense, unless of course that's what we're looking for: someone to blame. And naturally, Greek Life will be called the cause of alcohol issues on campus. Because everyone knows that there are never any house parties and students certainly don't drink in their dorms.

Students, greek or not, make their own choice to drink or not. Students need to take responsibility for their own drinking, and stop blaming it on the easiest target. And yes, there have to be rules, regulations and repercussions to protect the students, the university and the individual chapters. But in the scheme of things, fraternities and sororities are probably a safer place to do what students are going to do anyway. Fraternities aren't doing anything different from non-greek students; they're just doing it on a larger scale with many more restrictions and much larger consequences.

And as far as getting comments from greeks, it's important to know that the president is the one designated to release information to the media, or to make any official statements. So when the article says "Officials from all seven fraternities declined to comment," one would assume that the each president was contacted and refused to comment. Neither of the presidents of the two fraternities that were specifically cited within the article were asked to comment before the article ran, according to the presidents of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi.

"I never declined to comment. Personally it made me look like I had something to hide," said the Sigma Phi president.

I have contacted half of the presidents of the fraternities and sorority that were on the list, all of which were more than happy to talk to me; after all, that's their job. But members are not "officials," and they typically cannot provide any information. If a comment is warranted, talk to the president.

Like it or not, Greek Life is a huge part of this campus. And like it or not, they will be blamed and held responsible under any and all circumstances. Cheers, UA!

FSU Sig Eps Suspended for Crawlspace Incident

Fraternity at FSU Suspended for Hazing

As FratBoyNews.com reported on Tuesday, 31 Sig Ep pledges were found in a crawlspace under a home in Tallahassee, Florida. Police arrested four men and charged them with hazing.

Now new details about the hazing have emerged, and the future of the Sig Eps at FSU has been put in jeopardy. The four men arrested on the scene were Eric Fernandez and Nicholas Finazzo of Tallahassee Community College, and FSU students Drew Johnson and Joshua Vincent.

The fraternity was suspended immediately by the university on the news.

The condition of the pledges were recently revealed, and the hazing techniques employed by the Sig Eps at FSU are amongst the most bizarre the FratBoyNews has a ever seen. The pledges were dressed in sweat pants and white t-shirts. Their t-Shirt were covered in profanity and vulgar phrases. The pledges were covered in a variety of substances including "catfish stink bait, flour, raw eggs and vinegar" according to The Cavalier Daily. Now thats some nasty shit.

31 Sig Ep Pledges Found in Crawlspace

4 Arrested in Tallahassee Fraternity Hazing

In the most bizarre case of hazing from this past weekend, 31 pledges of Florida State's Sigma Phi Epsilon were found by Tallahassee police in the crawlspace underneath an off-campus house.

After a complaint of hazing, a local police officer responded in an unmarked cruiser to investigate the matter. Upon entering the house, the officer heard what he thought was screaming from a crawlspace. The officer called for backup and several Sig Ep brothers ran on foot.

After investigating, the police found 31 pledges in the crawlspace. They were reportedly wearing sweatpants and white t-shirts with vulgarity written on them.

The police charged 4 men with hazing - two who were FSU students, and two who were Tallahassee Community College students.

More trouble at UCF: Sigma Phi Epsilon Suspended

Pledge Claims Abuse During UCF Hazing Incident; Frat Suspended

The University of Central Florida has suspended a third fraternity for hazing. A SigEp pledge claims he was taken to an off-campus rural location and "forced to jump into a trash can full of Crisco, cottage cheese, syrup and sardines" he also claims to have been denied medical treatment when he injured his back.
The university has suspended two other fraternities recently. It suspended Sigma Alpha Epsilon for six years over a hazing incident in October of 2006, and suspended Pi Kappa Alpha in early 2005, also for hazing. UCF has had legal problems with the Pikes and their former house, as detailed below.
