July 23 - An unidentified person switched the men's restroom sign with the woman's on the sixth floor of the Arizona Health Sciences Center.

A UA research professor said she noticed that someone had switched the signs July 22 and told faculty to fix them. The next day, she noticed the men's sign was missing. Police have no suspects or witnesses.

July 22 - Police responded to a report about a woman who refused to pay her $8 taxi fare.

A Yellow Cab employee told police he picked up the woman after police had cited and released her for underage drinking. The woman told the officer she would call a taxi to take her home and that she had enough money to pay for it. The cab driver said the woman told him to stop at the Circle K so she could use the ATM machine.

After a few moments, she ran from the store, running north before crossing the street. The cab driver lost sight of her after that and was delayed at a red light. He was unable to report the incident right away because he didn't have a cell phone. He told police he wants to pursue charges against the woman.

July 24 - Police arrested a woman for false reporting, possession of drug paraphernalia, violation of a promise to appear in court and a suspended license.

Police conducted a routine records check before noticing a warrant out for the woman's arrest. She told police she didn't have any identification on her and verbally identified herself with a false name.

The officer smelt burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and checked the description in her warrant, realizing she lied about her name.

The officer then called the woman by her real name to which she responded, "Oh damn," and said she lied because she has a warrant out for her arrest. After arresting her, the officer conducted a search and found a black-handled smoking pipe in the woman's purse pocket that smelt of marijuana. The officer also found her Arizona driver's license and identification card in the purse.

Arizona Man in Charged with Trespassing While Taking a Shower

1:30 p.m., July 10 - Police arrested a man for false reporting near Sixth Street and Park Avenue after they noticed that the man looked like someone who had previously given out his brother's information as identification when caught trespassing at the Bear Down Gym on June 25.

When police questioned the man about that earlier incident, he told police he gave out his brother's information because he was drunk. Police told him his actions were illegal and he was cited for false reporting. Police then ordered him not to return to gym under any circumstances.

Fifteen minutes later, another officer saw the man walking toward the gym. Police found him showering with another man who was dressed in female clothing. He was arrested for criminal trespassing and his friend was told to never return to the gym or to any campus property.

1:05 a.m. July 15 - A 20-year-old Saline woman was robbed at gunpoint while walking to her vehicle after work in downtown Ann Arbor early Sunday morning, police reports said.

The woman was walking home from work when she was approached by an unknown man asking for directions. When she said she couldn't help him, he asked to use her cell phone, which she was holding. Before she could answer, he grabbed the phone with one hand and pulled a handgun from under his sweatshirt with the other. He demanded her purse and ordered her to lay flat on the ground. He then fled to a nearby vehicle.

Arizona Softball Coaches Honored as Nation's Best

It's the players who climb the mountain of success, but it's the coaches who stay behind them the whole way, pushing them toward their goals.

The Arizona softball coaches have been named the NCAA Division I staff of the year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, after the Wildcats won their eighth national title, and second straight, in June.

UA head coach Mike Candrea, assistants Larry Ray and Nancy Evans, volunteer assistant Dave Feinberg and student assistant Alicia Hollowell will be honored at the NFCA national convention in Las Vegas Nov. 28-Dec. 1.

"It's a huge honor," Evans said. "It's a humbling experience. We worked really hard this year with our team, and it paid off in the end."

Throughout the season, Evans put together scouting reports, and also gathered video and charts on opposing hitters.

The cerebral approach the coaches brto the game is what allowed the Wildcats to finish 50-14-1 this season, said junior pitcher Taryne Mowatt.

"Nancy has always been there, teaching me the mental part of the game," she said. "She never really tampered too much with the physical part and the mechanics of the game."

Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott won the Honda Award as the nation's top softball player.

Abbott, whose career ended one win short of the NCAA championship last week, was voted the top player in her sport by NCAA member schools on Monday. Other nominees were Kaitlin Cochran and Katie Burkhart of Arizona State, and Caitlin Lowe of Arizona.

Abbott holds NCAA Division I career records for wins (189), appearances (253), strikeouts (2,440), shutouts (112) and innings pitched (1448.0). She plans to train with the U.S. national team.

"I definitely have Olympic dreams in the future and would like to play softball for as long as I can," she said. "After that, I'd like to become a motivational speaker for children at the elementary school through high school level. And, of course, coach softball one day."

Tennessee's Candace Parker won the award in basketball.

Strange Man and Stolen Textbooks at Arizona

A man was arrested for possession of a stolen mountain bike at 888 N. Euclid Ave. May 30 after a police officer responded to a complaint about a strange man sleeping in front of a building.

The bike had a visible UA Parking and Transportation registration sticker on it, and a records check showed the bike belonged to a UA employee. Police returned the bike to the employee, who said he "didn't even know it was missing," according to reports.

Also, a man was cited and arrested for stealing a book in front of the campus bookstore May 23.

A bookstore employee said he thought the man stole the book the day before and came back to try and sell it.

The man told police he had stolen the book and had no intention of buying it, but tried to sell it back because he needed the money. It was an Earth System textbook valued at $100. The man was flagged for trespassing and cited for theft.

Almost every game at the Women's College World Series is a pitcher's duel, which is precisely why the last five years have proven you need hitters to win a championship.

Since Cat Osterman first led Texas to Oklahoma City in 2003, each subsequent World Series featured Osterman, Tennessee's Monica Abbott or both. And yet for all the postseason innings pitched by arguably the two best pitchers in the history of college softball -- and unquestionably the two most dominant pitchers of their tenures in the collegiate ranks -- neither the Longhorns nor Lady Vols could claim a national championship.

"One of the things that really bothers me is sometimes a pitcher is judged on whether she wins a national championship," Tennessee co-coach Ralph Weekly said after his team became the second in three years to lose the best-of-three championship series after winning the first game. Arizona beat the Lady Vols 5-0 Wednesday to claim the Wildcats' eight NCAA softball title.

The NCAA career leader in strikeouts, shutouts and a host of other statisical categories, Abbott was gracious and composed in defeat, fighting back tears at one point, but talking also of her plans for a future in international softball and outside of the game.

"Anybody who saw the game last night knows that [Abbott] pitched well enough to win the national championship," Weekly added. "But we left nine runners in scoring position, when all it would have taken was a sacrifice fly or a single to end it. And we just couldn't get it done, and that's not a knock against our kids either, because that was a collective effort."

Abbott finally succumbed in the final game of her college career, allowing five runs in one inning after allowing a total of five in her previous 90 innings.

She wasn't perfect in the finale, just as Osterman wasn't perfect at times during her stays in Oklahoma City. But those failures came only relative to the impossible standards of perfection, a level both Osterman and Abbott were charged with maintaining because they couldn't count on run support behind them.

In the end, it's not that Abbott failed to win a championship; it's that Tennessee failed to win a championship.

Arizona Man Arrested for Possession of Marijuana

A man was arrested for possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and speeding, near the campus of the University of Arizona.

As the man was being pulled over, the officer noticed him reaching across the passenger seat with several pieces of paper in his hand.

Upon questioning, the man's hands were shaking and he started to smoke a cigarette.

The officer said he could smell a faint odor of burnt marijuana and a stronger odor of fresh marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

The man told police he had a marijuana pipe inside the vehicle and gave police consent to search it. Inside, the officer found a grinder on the passenger floorboard and a backpack containing a Ziploc bag containing 2.07 grams of marijuana.

The officer also found several plastic bags and a digital scale. The man said the marijuana wasn't his but would not say to whom it belonged. He was later arrested.

Taryne Mowatt finished what she started and Arizona won its eighth NCAA softball title, breaking loose against Tennessee ace Monica Abbott for a 5-0 victory Wednesday night in the Women's College World Series.

The top-seeded Wildcats (50-14-1) lost the opener in the best-of-three championship series, then bounced back to win the final two games.

Mowatt (42-12) pitched all 60 innings in the tournament for Arizona and became the first pitcher to win seven games in the event.

It was scoreless in the fifth inning when Arizona scored all five runs. Jenae Leles hit a two-run single and Chelsie Mesa added a three-run homer for the Wildcats (50-14-1). Arizona, which needed help from an error to break Abbott's 43-inning scoreless streak in Game 2, got several key hits against her this time.

Caitlin Lowe, Arizona's speedy leadoff hitter, started the fifth inning by reaching on a slapped grounder back to Abbott (50-5). K'Lee Arredondo followed with a single, and an error by right fielder Nicole Kajitani put runners at second and third.

Abbott then intentionally walked Kristie Fox, who tied the tournament record with 11 hits, to load the bases for Mesa. Mesa's grounder made it through to center field to score the first two runs, and Mesa hit a 3-2 pitch over Kajitani's outstretched arms and the wall.

Mowatt broke the school record for wins in a season set by Alicia Hollowell in 2004.

Tuesday was officially ladies night on ESPN2, as a doubleheader of women's sports were showcased on the network.

The women of Arizona's softball team squared up the best-of-three College Softball World Series Tuesday night at one-game a piece behind a 10-inning shutout by pitcher Taryne Mowatt in a 1-0 victory over the lovely ladies of Tennessee.

Elsewhere in the WNBA, the Minnesota Lynx knocked off the Phoenix Mercury by just 5 points to improve their record to 1-7 on the season.

"Get the F*ck Away From My Car"

Two men were arrested on multiple offenses at parking lot 5072, 522 N. Tyndall Ave., at 8:50 a.m. April 8.

An officer saw a vehicle with a man smoking a cigarette in the passenger seat. The man was nervously looking around. The officer approached the man on foot. The man then jumped out of the vehicle and said to the officer, "Man, I ain't doing shit!"

The officer asked the man what he was doing on campus, and the man said he was waiting for his friend at Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall. When the officer asked the man what his friend was doing, the man said, "Man, I don't know. I just know that I ain't doing shit." The officer looked inside the vehicle. Another man approached the vehicle and said, "Get the fuck away from my car."

The first man was handcuffed for safety concerns due to his increasingly agitated state. The officer asked to search the vehicle, but the vehicle's owner said, "I'd rather you not." The officer saw a partially burnt marijuana cigarette in the ashtray of the car.

The officer searched the vehicle and found a leather pouch with a glass pipe inside. The pipe contained a white powder residue in the bowl area of the pipe.

The first man was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to comply with police. The other man was arrested for possession of marijuana. No other contraband was found in the vehicle or on either men.

The officer later saw bolt cutters and a cut-open bicycle U-lock on the ground near the residence hall. He found they belonged to the men, who were intending to steal a bike and sell it for money. The vehicle was impounded, and both men were booked into Pima County Jail.

Frat Caps Alcohol-Awareness Week With Miss Greek Pageant

Sigma Pi hosted its first ever "Miss Greek" competition Friday at the University of Arizona.

The event raised about $1,000 for an alcohol awareness organization. Twenty campus girls competed and answered questions and shared their thoughts on alcohol awareness with the more than 300 people who attended.

Lauren Blier, a pre-communication freshman and member of Gamma Phi Beta, was the lucky winner of the competition.

Police found a 18-year-old student lying on the northwest corner of North Euclid Avenue and East Second Street at midnight March 31.

She sat up when police approached her, and the officer observed red and watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of intoxicants coming from her mouth.

The student said she was waiting for a ride home so she would not drive drunk. The officer arrested her for minor in possession of liquor in the body. The girl became angry when the officer handed her the citation to sign.

"I wish I would have driven home drunk," she said and began crying, according to reports. She signed the citation by scribbling on the signature line. The officer released her after giving her the citation.

Man Threatens Brothers at Arizona Chi Phi House

An unknown man came into the University of Arizona's Chi Phi house on St. Patrick's Day and threatened brothers with a baseball bat and a gun.

The brothers said the man stopped in his vehicle near their house and had a blown out tire. He entered the frat house and told brothers he was going to kill them with a baseball bat. The brothers laughed at first and told him to leave.

The man then told brothers he has a gun in his car and he thought it would be funny if he shot the place up. The brothers locked themselves in a room until the police came.

March 11 - 10:27 p.m.: A man was arrested for a warrant after police saw him urinating, reports stated. A police officer saw the man urinating outside of the Campus Christian Center. A records check showed the man had two warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail. The man had a black fanny pack containing tobacco, metal knuckles and a knife that were placed into safekeeping.

March 12 - 9:13 p.m.: A glass pipe was found in a student's room at Cochise Residence Hall, reports stated. A resident assistant reported a smell of marijuana coming from one of the rooms and police went to the room. A student in the hall walked towards the police officers when they reached the room.

The student said he was a resident of the room. When police asked to search the room the student said, "No, I know my rights. I do not wish for you to enter my room at this time." Then the student said, "OK, OK, yes, you can enter." Police searched the student's side of the room only and found a small glass pipe on his desk. The student said the pipe was used to smoke marijuana. The student was referred to the Dean of Students Office and the pipe was placed into evidence.

Arizona Won't Ban Alcohol at Frats Like ASU

Arizona State University banned alcohol at fraternities last week for a month, but officials at it's cross-state neighbor say a similar ban won't take place on their campus.

Although the University of Arizona says it has the power to ban alcohol at anytime, officials say they won't.

"Technically, a ban could happen at any campus anywhere," Anthony Skevakis said. "It depends on the amount and type of behavior, but if there is an incident that we need to take action for we absolutely reserve the right to do so." Skevakis works as a program coordinator in the student life office at Arizona.

"Alcohol does play a major role in crimes on campus, but a ban on drinking at fraternities won't eliminate drinking on campus," said a campus police officer. "We need to hold individuals accountable for their behavior. ... Not all fraternities drink and participate in criminal acts; some are taking an active role in eliminating criminal behavior by policing themselves."

Teens Who Shot at AZ Fiji House Get Sentenced

Drive-by At Frat House Brings Prison Term

A Tucson teenager was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison Monday in a drive-by shooting at a University of Arizona fraternity house.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Gus Aragon sentenced William Edward Morgan, 17, to 10 1/2 years for a drive-by shooting, 7 1/2 years for aggravated assault and 2.25 years for endangerment.

Morgan must serve all sentences consecutively, Aragon said.

Morgan and Robert William Ramos, 19, of Tucson, were arrested in the September shooting outside the Phi Delta Gamma fraternity house, 1801 E. First St.

An 18-year-old woman was wounded, police said.

Ramos pleaded guilty Monday to aggravated assault causing serious physical injury. Aragon will sentence Ramos on April 4. Under terms of Ramos' plea, probation is not available.

March 1 - 11:40 a.m.: A police officer saw a man washing car windows and asking for money from drivers at Circle K. The man appeared drunk and had been warned for aggressive panhandling by the Tucson Police Department in the past. The officer told the man to leave. The man walked away and walked over to a driver and asked him for money. He was cited for loitering.

March 1 - 12:57 p.m.: Police saw a man with an empty a bottle of beer into a 64 ounce cup and drink from it at a bus stop bench. The man told police, "At least I'm not littering. I threw the bottle away." The man also threw the citation he received from the office into the trash can.

"If You Can Dodge a Wrench, You Can Dodge a Ball"

Fraternity Dodgeball Contest Raises $2.8k for Cystic Fibrosis

Kappa Sigma fraternity raised more than $2,800 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in their second annual dodgeball tournament yesterday, choosing the organization because one of their members has the disease, according to event officials. More than 200 students and nearly 100 spectators met yesterday morning at the north gym of the Student Recreation Center for the friendly competition and pizza.

"(The teams) were intense, yelling and screaming; whistles were blowing and everyone was having fun," said Matt Mayberry, economics junior, vice president of Kappa Sigma and coach of Delta Delta Delta's first-place team.

"Not only are we able to give them $2,800 from another nonprofit organization, but it helps give publicity about the disease," Mayberry said.

Andrew Rozen, an animal sciences sophomore and event organizer, said his fraternity holds annual fundraisers because they want to give back to the community. Rozen, philanthropy chair for Kappa Sigma, said the event was partially influenced by Rawson Marshall Thurber's movie "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story," but that this year's event was also motivated by last year's success.

Rozen also said a member of Kappa Sigma has cystic fibrosis, although the member could not be reached for comment. Fraternity members have volunteered 116 hours at local nonprofits and plan to increase the number of volunteer hours throughout the semester, Rozen said.

Nationally, Kappa Sigma's more than 200 chapters donated about 170,000 hours of service and $724,000 to various charities, said Patrick Corr, deputy commissioner of national service effort for Kappa Sigma's "A Greater Cause Commission."

Bott said the fraternity encourages chapters to do service projects in their local community as it "is such an important part of what we do." Rozen said the chapter plans to continue the dodgeball tournament in the future as part of the fraternity's service projects.

"This year, we will have all the kinks out," he said. "Hopefully, we will make this an annual tournament."

"Israel Week" Banner Stolen at Arizona

Feb. 22 - 8:30 p.m.: A silver Dell laptop, a Motorola flip cell phone and a history book were reported stolen from the Main Library. A male student reported the theft from a study room after he left to use the restroom at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 22. He said he wasn't gone for more than two minutes. After noticing the items missing, the student walked around the library for a few minutes to see if he could spot someone holding his property before calling police. Both the victim and UAPD watched library surveillance tapes and saw nothing that drew attention. Police have no suspects or witnesses.

Feb. 22 - 7 a.m.: A member of the Hillel Center reported the theft of a banner hanging in front of Old Main. The theft occurred sometime between 6 p.m. Feb. 21 and 7 a.m. Feb. 22. The banner was advertising Israel week and listed a schedule of events. It was worth about $240. Police have no suspects or witnesses.

Feb. 22: Police received a call from the Student Union Memorial Center from a male student who said his ex-girlfriend violated his harassment injunction against her again. The student said his ex-girlfriend called him at least 160 times between Feb. 21-22 and left text messages as well. The two students dated from January-June 2006. On July 16, the male student placed the order of injunction. The order stated that his ex-girlfriend could not make contact by phone, in person or in writing, including text messages. UAPD attempted to call the woman, but there was no answer. On Jan. 30, the woman was arrested for violating the order at her residence. The police suggested the male student notify the judge about the latest phone calls at the hearing for the Jan. 30 arrest.
