Purdue Fraternity Suspensions Lifted

Five fraternities at Purdue University suspended earlier this month for alcohol violations were cleared by the school this week to resume their regular activities.

Delta Upsilon, Phi Kappa Psi, Kappa Delta Rho, Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were all among the frats suspended while the university investigated the possibility of underage drinking during rush week.

By university rules, alcohol is prohibited from all rush week events. To stay active now, some of the fraternities will be required to have alcohol awareness workshops.

The frats could face full suspensions if found in violation of campus policy again.

Facebook helped police find two men they believe are responsible for several incidents in which women at Purdue University were fondled in odd locations.

"Information was posted on the homepage, on Facebook. We have more than 6,000 students who have signed up to our group. We called the sororities and alerted the house mom. Got them out of bed and they started a phone tree and we called the residence hall and they put up flyers," a Purdue spokesperson said.

Female students reported being fondled in an elevator and at the campus food court. With information obtained from Facebook, police were able to track down fondling suspect George Odongo and his friend James Bunanglag, who they say encouraged the activity.

Despite the fondling incidents, Purdue students still believe they are safe on campus as long as they take precautions.

"I talked to my roommate and we discussed, you know, not riding in elevators alone at night. So I'm feeling pretty good," Purdue sophomore Kacey Reuker told a local TV station after the arrests.

'Greek' No Longer the Word at Purdue

IFC Aims to Change Fraternity, Sorority Images

If Purdue University's Interfraternity Council has any say in how students at the campus refer to members of fraternities and sororities, they hope the term "Greek" won't be in their vocabulary beginning this school year.

Rather than calling members of social organizations like fraternities and sororities "Greeks," the IFC hopes students will refer to the community as "Fraternity and Sorority Life."

"It better identifies the population that we serve," Kyle Pendleton, president of the Association of Fraternity Advisers, told Purdue's student newspaper. The IFC leaders hope changing the term will promote a stronger sense of community among the organizations and students.

"We are trying to create one united fraternity and sorority community and this ... subsequent logo and brand analysis are the first steps towards doing that," teve Holtsclaw, president of the council, said in an e-mail.

Frat Guy of the Week: Drew Brees

New Orleans Saint's quarterback and Purdue University graduate Drew Brees is working with his old college fraternity to help rebuild the city devastated by hurricane damage.

Brees and brothers from Purdue's Sigma Chi fraternity will work to rebuild homes in New Orleans. The NFL quarterback paid for 100 brothers to travel to the city.

"It will be a time to get to know each other, bond and reflect on what giving back is and how giving back affects others," Chris Horney, the fraternity's current president, told the Purdue student newspaper.

Brees led the Purdue football team to the Rose Bowl in 2001, and has since been a quarterback with the Saints and San Diego Chargers. He led the Saints to the franchise's first NFC championship this past season.

Jury Selection Underway for Trial of Ex-Purdue Football Player

Ex-Purdue Football Player on Trial in 2 Purdue Attacks

Jury selection has begun in the trial of an ex-Purdue University football player accused of attacking two woman in separate incidents on the same night in 2005.

Kyle D. Williams, who was no longer a member of the football team at the time of the attacks but still a Purdue student, first attacked a woman on around 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 29, 2005 in the parking lot of Delta Zeta sorority. She was found unconscious by a Delta Zeta sister who had come to let her into the house.

Court documents said the woman had a broken nose, busted teeth and a black eye. Around 10:30 p.m., police said Williams struck a different woman from behind and punched her in the face several times. She also suffered similar injuries.

Frat Guy of the Week: Fiji's Jim Gaffigan

Comedian Jim Gaffigan was a brother of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at Purdue University.

Over the years, Gaffigan has performed stand-up comedy throughout the United States and has had specials featured on Comedy Central. He has had many roles in movies, including a memroable cameo in the classic film Super Troopers.

Today, the FIJI brother continues to do stand-up while making various appearances on television and in commercials.

Purdue Girl Leaves Alpha Chi Omega; Sisters Called Her a Pig

Former Sorority Member Shares Experience With Discrimination

A sister of Purdue University's chapter of Alpha Chi Omega dropped out of her sorority after sisters put a sign on her door that had her head superimposed on a pig's body, with the phrase "Looks like somebody gained weight," written on it.

Michelle Sullivan had been a sister of Alpha Chi Omega for three years, but the sign on her door in February was the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

"I felt so scrutinized I was afraid to sleep; I never ate in the dining area because I was so scared," Sullivan said. "Then, one morning I wake up and this (poster) is on my door."

Sullivan said she considers herself to be a "bigger boned woman."

"I'm speaking for almost 100 percent of women today; when you call a woman fat, she will never forget that," she said. "You don't think every day since that picture I've looked in the mirror and assessed myself?"

Body of Missing Purdue Student Found in High-Voltage Room

Purdue Police Call Parents Back to Campus

The body of Wade Steffey, a Purdue University student who was last seen at a Phi Kappa Theta Party on Jan. 13, was found in a high-voltage utility room of a dorm on the campus.

Wade's parents, Dale and Dawn Steffey, returned to Purdue on Monday. After searching parts of the campus and region for over two months, Steffey was finally found. Friends are not sure how he would have gained access to the room or why he may have been in it.

Purdue's Frat GPA Falling

Overall Frat GPA Drops Below All-Male Average

According to a report from Purdue University's IFC, the GPA of current frat recognized on campus has fallen a bit from 2.727 to 2.717, lower than the all-male average.

Purdue's student newspaper cites the exclusion of suspended and probated fraternities for causing the average fraternity grade point average to drop. Frats that are suspended or on probation like Sigma Phi Epsilon and Tau Kappa Epsilon were left out of the report.

"I am disappointed in the overall fraternity average, but I am anticipating an improvement," said Purdue's IFC president. Sororities on the campus reportedly have a collective average of 3.101.

Purdue Continues Search for Missing Freshman

Missing Freshman's Parents Return to Continue Search

Wade Steffey's parents have returned to the Purdue campus to continue the search for their missing son. As reported by the Frat Boy News last month, Steffey disappeared after last being seen at a part at Phi Kappa Theta on Jan. 13.

Local volunteer firemen and students are helping Wade's parents conduct rural searches around the surrounding areas of Purdue. A fund has been develped to help aid in the search costs. Nothing was reported to be found last week in a search of a nearby river.

Wade Steffey's parents are remaining optimistic in the search for their missing son, hoping he'll return home at any minute.

As reported by the Frat Boy News last week, Steffey disappeared on Saturday, Jan. 13 and was last seen at a Phi Kappa Theta party. Police reportedly stepped up their search when they learned that man who was charged with murder was near Lafayette at the time Steffey's whereabouts became unknown.

Police Launch Search for Missing Purdue Student

Wade S. Steffey, a 19-year old freshmen at Purdue University, has been missing since he was last seen at a Phi Kappa Theta party last weekend.

Police said Steffey last used his cell phone around 12:30 a.m. Saturday night, and withdrew $50 from his bank account the night before. The missing student was on a full scholarship in the college's aviation technology program.

After searching the campus all week, his whereabouts are still unknown.
