College Financial Aid Industry Probed

School Loan Corruption Widespread

As a result of an investigation into the student loan industry this week, college employees will no longer be able benefit from loan providers, Yahoo News reported.

Yahoo said the SLM Corp., commonly known as Sallie Mae, also agreed to pay $2 million into a fund to educate students and parents about the financial aid industry, and it will adopt a code of conduct created by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is heading the probe.

Sallie Mae operates student loan programs at more than 5,600 schools and has agreed to stop running call centers and providing additional staff for individual college financial aid offices. THe company will also stop paying financial aid officers who serve on advisory boards and will no longer fund trips for school officials, Yahoo reported.

Six colleges, including the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Syracuse University, Fordham University, Long Island University and St. John's University, have agreed to reimburse students with a total of about $3.27 million for the inflated loan prices created by revenue sharing agreements

Food Network Visits Penn's Psi Upsilon

'Dinner Impossible' Episode Filmed at Penn Frat

Dinner: Impossibe, the Food Network reality show which places celebrity chef Robert Irvine in challenging situations, has filmed an episode in the Psi Upsilon house at the University of Pennsylvania, known as "the Castle", pictured right.

More the 20 fraternity brothers volunteered to help Irvine prepare a meal to be served in the house's expansive dining hall, which can seat up to sixty.

The guests are to include Penn's President Amy Gutmann, a slew of Philadelphia based chefs and restaurateurs, in addition to fraternity alumni and school administrators. Celebrity chef Robert Irvine began his career as a cook in the British Navy, which led to being a chef to Prince Charles, several White House events, and two Atlantic City casinos.

He certainly had a challenge on this episode. The fraternities small kitchen was located in the basement, a floor below the dining hall. Additionally, it boasted several non-functioning appliances, such a broken dumb waiter, and broken stove top burners.

Scheduled to air at 10:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, the half-hour show will be rebroadcast at 1:30 a.m., Thursday, April 19; 4:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Sunday, April 22; and 2:30 a.m., Monday, April 23.

Microsoft Sponsors Frat Party To Make Zune Cool

Microsoft brought there latest gadget into the world of Greek Life last weekend at the University of Pennsylvania's chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. A marketing team contracted by Microsoft sponsored a party at the SAE house Saturday, lending dozens of their Zune mp3 players for use by the brothers.

"They wanted product placement, to get the name out," said a marketing representative. "On top of that, they wanted to get some good pictures—potentially to use for advertising."
