New Jewish Frat Open for Business in Santa Barbara

Sigma Alpha Mu Opens at UCSB

Jewish men looking to join a new fraternity this spring at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will now have an alternative to Alpha Epsilon Pi.

As Sigma Alpha Mu officially joins the UCSB IFC this spring, students at the college can now rush the fraternity. With 1,800 Jews at the university, the chapter determined that they would be quite successful after a study by its national board of officials.

The original poster is right, Sammy was founded as a Jewish fraternity but has long since lost the right to call itself one owning to the lack of the word Jewish or Judaism anywhere in their mission or creed and having a remarkably small percentage of their actual membership (current) be Jewish.

SAM is as much Jewish as AEPi. What is the criteria to be called a Jewish fraternity anyway? The number of Jews? Do you get more points if there are more Orthodox Jews? What about those that are Jewish, but don't practice? The problem with AEPi is it's all a numbers game with them. They may have more Jewish men, but they also have more dorks on campus than the entire IFC. And Jon, thanks for clarifying the fact that SAM "lost the right to call itself one (Jewish house)" Who appointed you the God over Greek houses? Just because AEPi has a menorah as part of their logo does that mean they are the sole owner of the right to be called Jewish? I don't find any reference to "dork" in AEPi's mission statement, but man oh man, the AEPi's are king on every campus in that category.

Sigma Alpha Mu was founded by 8 Jewish men, but since has opened its doors to all. Currently there are more non-Jewish men in the fraternity than Jewish. I would know. I am a brother. So I think by giving that connotation in this blog that this fraternity is soley for Jewish people is giving the wrong impression.
