THURSDAY'S BIG STORY:
Sigma Chi NFL QB Recruits Frat to Help Rebuild New Orleans
New Orleans Saint's quarterback and Purdue University graduate Drew Brees is working with his old college fraternity to help rebuild the city devastated by hurricane damage.

Brees and brothers from Purdue's Sigma Chi fraternity will work to rebuild homes in New Orleans. The NFL quarterback paid for 100 brothers to travel to the city.

Sigma Chi NFL Quarterback Recruits Frat to Help Rebuild New Orleans

Frat Guy of the Week: Drew Brees

New Orleans Saint's quarterback and Purdue University graduate Drew Brees is working with his old college fraternity to help rebuild the city devastated by hurricane damage.

Brees and brothers from Purdue's Sigma Chi fraternity will work to rebuild homes in New Orleans. The NFL quarterback paid for 100 brothers to travel to the city.

"It will be a time to get to know each other, bond and reflect on what giving back is and how giving back affects others," Chris Horney, the fraternity's current president, told the Purdue student newspaper.

Brees led the Purdue football team to the Rose Bowl in 2001, and has since been a quarterback with the Saints and San Diego Chargers. He led the Saints to the franchise's first NFC championship this past season.

Greeks at St. Norbert College Don't F*ck Around When it Comes to Community Service

St. Norbert Students Shed Party Image With Good Deeds

Members of St. Norbert College's eight fraternities and sororities are trying to move away from the stereotypical Animal House-image of Greek Life by trading in their togas and beer bongs for community service participation points.

"We feel very strongly about helping others," Katie Laurinaitis, a sister of Epsilon Xi, told the Green Bay Press Gazette. Last weekend, the sorority held a benefit walk for a sister who died several years ago after a struggle with epilepsy.

The girls of Theta Phi sorority recently picked up litter and did yard work for an elderly woman and the brothers of Tau Kappa Epsilon are planning a fundraiser for Alzheimer's charities in the fall.

Vermont FIJIs Cleared of Hazing Charges

Dismissed Hazing Charges Trigger Frat's Demand for Apology

The University of Vermont's chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was recently cleared of hazing charges stemming from a pledge party where they fraternity was accused of gay-bashing and drinking.

The four accused FIJI brothers fought the hazing charges in court, and successfully won the case. A Vermont attorney general appealed the case, but formally dropped all charges Wednesday.

Some of the fraternity's lawyers are now asking the university to apologize to the brothers for giving them a bad name on campus for no reason. The university doesn't plan to apologize, a report said.

The brothers still face a suspension from the university for violating internal policies.

Stanford Will Have a New Jewish Sorority in the Fall

Jewish Sorority Approved for Fall

The newest sorority on the Stanford University campus next fall will be the traditionally Jewish Alpha Epsilon Phi.

Alpha Epsilon Phi was approved to become the university's sixth sorority, joining Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Chi Omega and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

“We are so excited to bring this to Stanford, since we have been working on getting approved for months.” Molly Weiss told the university's student newspaper. She hopes to be in officer in the sorority next fall.

“You will see several events sponsored by us,” she said. “Some will be Judaism related, and others will not be. We really want to be open to everyone who is interested.”

Drake Frat Houses Vandalized

Eggs, Paint Used on Drake Fraternity Houses

Two fraternities at Drake University were the victims of vandalism this week

Police said a yard sign was damaged with eggs and spray paint after they were thrown at the university's Sigma Phi Epsilon house.

At the Sigma Chi house, police said someone painted a cross in the front yard. No arrests were reported and police listed no suspects.

Fresno State Student Opens Fire Over Video Games

Shooting Over Playstation

A 19-year old student opened fire at the California State University in Fresno reportedly over an argument playing video games.

Shooter Jonquel Brooks killed one person and wounded several others during a shooting spree at the campus Monday night.

Brooks was charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

College Station Police said the Bryan man arrested Tuesday for robbing a branch of the First National Bank will face more charges.

According to police, Jade Hannah McCullough matched the description a suspect in two prior robberies at the Post Oak Mall Branch in College Station.

Police said he confessed while being questioned in connection with Tuesday’s robbery.

According to investigators, McCullough walked into the bank and demanded money from a teller. They said no weapon was shown and he left the scene with an unknown amount of cash. Police captured him less than an hour later after a short pursuit.
