SIX FRATS SUSPENDED IN MASSIVE DRUG RAID'S WAKE

Police: Some of 75 students busted may be in other Greek organizations

A day after a massive drug raid on the campus of San Diego State University in which 75 students were arrested, school officials on Wednesday suspended six fraternities until further notice.

The fraternities suspended were Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Theta, Theta Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Mu, a news release on the university's Web site said.

The fraternities were placed on an "interim suspension" until a "hearing into evidence gathered" in the raid, the university said. READ MORE

A year after the sudden death of an Alpha Phi sister at San Diego State University, her parents say they finally have some closure to a very sad experience.

Nineteen-year-old Shirley Jennifer "Jenny" Poliakoff died May 6, 2007 - the day after attending a sorority formal. After her death, alcohol and cocaine were both found in her system, but she didn't die of an overdose, her parents Ray and Kim Poliakoff said. READ MORE

Did a massive drug raid on the campus of San Diego State University come at the end of "the best year ever at SDSU?"

An anonymous student at the university aiming to capitalize off the incident thinks so.

Less than 48 hours after the drug bust that netted 96 arrests - 75 of which were students including brothers of Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi - the student already has a Web site devoted to the event with t-shirts for sale for anyone looking to "commemorate" the raid. READ MORE

75 STUDENTS BUSTED IN SAN DIEGO STATE DRUG RAID

Included brothers of Theta Chi and Phi Kappa Psi, police say

A total of 75 students, including brothers of Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi fraternities, were arrested Tuesday in a large-scale drug raid at San Diego State University, police said.

Gang members were also arrested in the raid, one of whom has ties to Mexican drug cartels, police said.

A Theta Chi brother sent out a mass text message to people police called his customers alerting them he and his associates in the drug dealing operation wouldn't be able to sell cocaine while they were away in Las Vegas, agents of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration said. READ MORE

A Campus Mourns a Lost Brother

MONDAY'S BIG STORY
MAN CHARGED IN MURDER OF SIGMA PI SENIOR AT CAL

Police have arrested a man they say played a role in the murder of a 21-year-old brother of Sigma Pi at the University of California in Berkeley.

Andrew Thomas Hoeft-Edenfield, 20, admitted to fatally stabbed Christopher Wootton at about 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the rear parking lot of the university's Chi Omega sorority house, police said.

Wootton was stabbed in the left side of his upper chest, police said. He was an engineering major and was set to graduate later this month. He planned to stay at Berkeley to attend graduate school. READ MORE

A 19-year-old student at Hofstra University claims the sister of Phi Epsilon threatened her after she opted to de-pledge when learning of a bizarre initiation ritual.

Courtney Holt said Phi Epsilon wasn't "a sorority, it's a cult." Ms. Holt said she left the sorority after finding out she would have to be branded in her groin area with a hot fork before becoming a sister. READ MORE

Sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority at Southeastern Louisiana University have been accused of hazing new members.

Student Arieal Ellis said she was hazed in January at an off-campus party where she was locked in a room, told to remove her clothes, struck with a belt and paddle and slapped in the face, police said. READ MORE

EVICTED WVU FRATS MUST CORRECT VIOLATIONS BEFORE MOVING BACK TO HOUSES

Four fraternities evicted from their chapters houses last spring at West Virginia University still aren't allowed to move back.

The university's Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Sigma were kicked out of their houses in May after officials found fire code violations, blocked entrances and exits and holes in ceilings.

Each fraternity is permitted to move back once it has each of the violations corrected, but all four are finding it difficult to raise enough money to help their cause. READ MORE

STOLEN STATUES FOUND AT ALABAMA SIGMA PI HOUSE

Two statues valued at about $17,000 stolen from a local yacht club were found last week at the University of Alabama's Sigma Pi house, police said.

While brothers were home for winter break, a university employee was doing a routine inspection of the fraternity's house when she found the two statues first reported stolen sometime between Dec. 14 and 19 from the NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala., police said.

One of the statues, a goat worth about $16,000, would have need three or four people alone to move, police said. READ MORE

FLORIDA AND MARYLAND FRATS ACCUSED OF HAZING
CAMPUS OFFICIALS: LINE-UPS, CHEMICALS SPILLED ON PLEDGES

Following a series of hazing allegations, fraternities at both the University of Florida and University of Maryland have been sanctioned while investigations continue.

Florida's Alpha Tau Omega was placed on probation through the fall of 2008 after a response to allegations the fraternity held a late night "line up" in which pledges were forced to jump into a mud pit when incorrectly answering a question about the chapter's history.

Maryland's chapter of Zeta Beta Tau is facing disciplinary actions for hazing during its initiation ceremony. Pledges were placed in a circle and asked to name the fraternity's founders, the university's student newspaper reported. READ MORE

A George Washington University fraternity is being investigated for hazing after several of its pledges told campus administrators they feared for their well being as "hell week" approached.

Pledges reported through anonymous tip lines they believed they were being hazed by the brothers.

The university last week began investigating the accusations. Since then, three brothers have been suspended on hazing and drug violations and another was hospitalized after overdosing on sleeping pills. READ MORE

Fraternities in Illinois are worried a smoking ban set to be enacted Jan. 1 by the state could extend to their privately-owned Greek houses.

"I think the department of health has more important concerns it should be dealing with,” Jonathan Shepler, Illinois State University's Interfraternity Council president told a local newspaper.

The state of Illinois is placing a ban on smoking in all public places. What the state hasn't made clear, however, is if the ban will include privately-owned fraternity houses. READ MORE

Brothers of West Virginia University's chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon have long road of retribution before make amends for stealing a tree from a Morgantown park and decorating it for Christmas.

Two students were said by police to have stolen a Blue Spruce tree from a nearby park and taken it to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house to serve as decoration. One was a brother of the fraternity, while the other was not.

The fraternity was placed on probation by the university, ordered to pay $1,100 in restitution and to perform 500 hours of community service. READ MORE
