UW Suspends Frat Over Alcohol

The University of Wyoming has suspended its chapter of Sigma Nu fraternity until January 2009 for violations committed in a September alcohol-related incident, campus administrators said.

Four of the chapter's brothers were suspended following the incident from the university, but were later reinstated after a state judge intervened.

The chapter was also suspended briefly as a campus organization in October after allegations that dangerous levels of alcohol were reportedly being used at the fraternity house.

The details of the fraternity's latest suspension have not been revealed by the university.

"The university is committed to working with Sigma Nu to make them an active organization on campus again," said Jessica Lowell, a university spokeswoman. "This agreement outlines the path we will take to get there."

More than two dozen students face charges of underage drinking following a Saturday night party at Bradley University's Sigma Nu house.

Police raided the party and issued a total to 28 citations in all, they said.

The bust was part of an ongoing program to eliminate fun.

A freshman at Clesmson University was found dead Sunday morning after a party held at the college's Sigma Nu fraternity house.

Benjamin Sprague, 18, of Greenville, S.C., was found dead on a futon at the fraternity's off-campus house after attending a party there Saturday night, police said.

Sprague died of respiratory arrest, caused by acute alcohol intoxication, police said, adding they don't suspect foul play.

The campus' Sigma Nu chapter was placed on an interim suspension following the incident until a police and university investigation is complete.

Authorities said an autopsy is being performed on a Miami University student from Piqua, Ohio, who was found dead in a fraternity house.

Investigators said Clifton Alexander, 20, was a junior at the university.

They said Alexander was found dead on Monday night at the house on Talawanda Avenue in Oxford.According to police, no foul play appears to be involved.

They said that Alexander may have died of natural causes.

Police are investigating after a Miami University student was found dead in the room of a fraternity house in Oxford Monday.

Students gathered outside the Sigma Nu House for a candlelight vigil Monday night to remember their fraternity brother.

Oxford police say they do not suspect foul play, nor do they believe it was a suicide.

The student's name has not yet been released.

The Butler County coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Frat Guy of the Week: Al Michaels

The voice of NBC's Sunday Night Football, longtime sports broadcaster Al Michaels was a brother of Sigma Nu fraternity while he majored in radio and television at Arizona State University.

After college, Michaels began covering a minor league baseball team in Hawaii, while also working as the play-by-play man for the University of Hawaii's football and basketball games.

In 1977, Michaels was hired by ABC where he covered a variety of sporting events, including the historic victory of the U.S.A. men's hockey team over Russia in 1980, commonly known as "The Miracle on Ice."

In 1986, Michael's became the host of ABC's Monday Night Football, where he would stay until moving to NBC to broadcast its Sunday night games with his partner John Madden.

The brothers of Sigma Nu are back at the University of North Carolina and best of all, they've reclaimed their old house.

"It's a completely different dynamic than we've been used to," said Edward Prewitt, president of the fraternity. "At this point we're kind of viewed as outsiders in the frat scene. We're known as 'the guys taking back (Alpha Epsilon Pi's) house.'"

After disbanding due to poor recruitment numbers in 2002, the chapter leased its former house to Alpha Epsilon Pi. A stipulation in the lease was that, if Sigma Nu could generate enough interest to fill the house, they could return.

Sigma Nu did just that. In the spring, the university reinstated the fraternity and the brothers began planning to fix-up their old house.

The change will leave brothers of Alpha Epsilon Phi without a house for the upcoming school year. The chapter hopes to relocate soon.

Frat Guy of the Week: Paul Rudd

"Knocked Up" and 40-Year Old Virgin co-star Paul Rudd was a brother of Sigma Nu while he attended the University of Kansas.

Rudd, 38, was born in Passaic, New Jersey. His father was a tour guide and his mother was the manager of a TV station.

Since then, Rudd has starred in Clueless, Wet Hot American Summer, The Cider House Rules, Anchorman and The Object of My Affection. He also had a role in the TV series Friends.

Duke Swimmer and Sigma Nu Brother Found Dead

Junior Found Dead in Dorm Room

Duke is mourning the loss of a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and the swimming and diving team.

Chris Sanders, a Junior and 20 years old, was found dead in is his dorm room on Dukes campus, according to University administrators.

Currently the cause of death is unknown.

Sanders room is sealed off until police have been able to conclude their investigation.

Sigma Nu released a statement saying "Chris's death came as a shock to all of us. He touched everyone that knew him in ways impossible to express. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all who loved him."

Party Crashers Start Trouble at Trinity College

A Sigma Nu brother at Trinity College was stabbed in the cheek and another student was threatened with a gun early Saturday morning when 3 men not affiliated with the frat tried to crash a party.

As reported by the Hartford Courant, a brother said one of the three men held a black pistol and then a box cutter to his face before Slater was stabbed during a confrontation on the front porch. The assault occurred after they were asked to leave the property.

"Sam was spitting blood,'' said another brother. "We called police immediately. We took him up to the third floor and put pressure on the wound.''

"We're incredibly thankful it was not life-threatening,'' said Jeffrey Walker, president of the Sigma Nu chapter. "It's certainly something we're going to have to discuss, as a fraternity, to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.''

The newest turn of events in the Sigma Nu at Middle Tennessee State University story involves a subpoena that has been issued to the Sigma Nu's national office by the local police on the case. While a university led investigation into hazing accusations had not concluded hazing had occurred, a Sigma Nu nationals office investigation resulted in the chapters charter being revoked. Now the University contends the details of the investigation by the fraternity are not being shared with the school, despite repeated requests and promises that it would be delivered.

"One of the things the national fraternity has said repeatedly is that they are working in partnership with the university...I've never had to subpoena a partner before to get access to information they told me they would give me." said Bob Glenn, MTSU vice president for student affairs.

"We will respond as promptly as we can...We certainly respect the responsibility of law enforcement to do their jobs. As law-abiding corporate citizens we certainly will do our part to cooperate and abide with the law" said the fraternity's executive director, Brad Beacham.

One has to wonder, why wouldn't the Fraternity share its findings with the school? Hasn't it already admitted there was a problem when they revoked the charter? Is the fraternity simply trying to protect is (former) members, or is it trying to protect the themselves. National Fraternity Responds to MTSU Situation

FratBoyNews.com initially reported on the revocation of Sigma Nu's charter at Middle Tennessee State University on January 17th, 2007. At that time there was little detail as to how the decision was came down, other than some vague references to hazing. Sigma Nu's national Office released a statement clarifying the situation.

The national Sigma Nu organization was initially tipped off to the hazing allegations by a call to their "Hazing Hotline" in November of 2006, and MTSU had apparently received a tip-off around the same time. The national chapter and the school launched separate investigations. However, the two organizations came to very different conclusions. While MTSU found no evidence of wrong doing, Sigma Nu's national office voted to revoke the chapters charter.

The Murfreesboro Post reported "Sigma Nu’s Regent (national president) John R. Pitts stated, 'Sigma Nu Fraternity always seeks to work in partnership with host institutions and we did so in this matter...' Pitts added that he is hopeful that the Fraternity’s decision in this matter will be respected by the University. 'We look forward to the day when Sigma Nu can be re-established at Middle Tennessee State University,' said Pitts."

MTSU Fraternity's Charter Revoked After Hazing Investigation

Middle Tennessee State's Theta Iota chapter of Sigma Nu officially had their charter revoked by its national board.

After 3 years of ongoing hazing allegations, the current brothers will no longer have a frat. Although no concrete evidence has been discovered indicating said hazing, the Sigma Nu nationals have decidedly had enough with the MTSU chapter. Brothers, justifiably so, believe taking their charter away for nothing specific is far too severe.
