Louisville Racks Up 73 Points in Opener

Brian Brohm threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns Thursday night as 10th-ranked Louisville opened the season with a 73-10 crushing of Murray State.

Brohm left early in the second half after completing 16 of 21 passes. Louisville produced its largest point total in 81 years and won its 19th straight game.

Harry Douglas caught five passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

The game marked the debut of Louisville Coach Steve Kragthorpe, who took over the team when Bobby Petrino moved on to guide the Atlanta Falcons.

Anthony Allen added 56 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and George Stripling gained 91 yards on 14 rushes.

Louisville piled up 655 yards of offense and scored 49 points in the first half. The Cardinals scored on their first play with Brohm throwing a 44-yard pass to Douglas.

The Atlanta Falcons will need a new quarterback, and here are five seniors they will be scouting:

1. Brian Brohm, Louisville. Falcons coach Bobby Petrino doesn't need a scouting report on the senior, who threw for nearly 6,000 yards with 35 touchdowns the past two seasons in Petrino's college offense.

2. Chad Henne, Michigan. Already has racked up more career passing yards (7,777) than Tom Brady did in Ann Arbor.

3. Andre Woodson, Kentucky. SEC's reigning total offense and touchdown leader has more tools than the last UK quarterback to be drafted high, Tim Couch.

4. John David Booty, Southern Cal. Carson Palmer ... Matt Leinart ... is the Pac-10's most efficient passer next first-round quarterback?

5. Colt Brennan, Hawaii. Is one-time Colorado quarterback (58 touchdown passes in 2006) just a product of the system?

Louisville Wideout Faces DUI, Drug Charges

A Louisville wide receiver was scheduled to appear in court next month to face charges of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

The charges against JaJuan Spillman stem from a car accident in January.

The sophomore was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21, the day before Louisville's home game against Syracuse.

Spillman continues to practice with the team.

"We are aware of JaJuan Spillman being in court and will not comment until the issue is resolved through the courts," Louisville spokesman Rocco Gasparro said.

According to a police report, an officer responded to an accident near campus. The report said Spillman and an unnamed passenger admitted to the officer that they had smoked marijuana in the car. An officer found 9.3 grams of marijuana, police said.

Spillman averaged 27.9 yards per kickoff return last season and tied a school record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Rutgers and caught seven passes for 56 yards.

Everyone has that friend that claims he makes money gambling on football every season, you know, the one that claims to have called all the upsets before they happened, while also saying that was his big money game of the weekend.

Turns out that there are some of those people out there early in the college football season. Gamblers have much better returns early in the year as opposed to the middle and the end.

This happens for several reasons, none of which are in favor of the gambler.

First off, the odds makers are basically compiling off season and past performance data to help calculate early season odds, so, naturally, there is not much hard facts and teams can under or over perform in the early stages of the season.

Once these teams play a few games, odds makers have more to go on and things become tougher for gamblers.

The other reason early season is a gamblers paradise is money. Gamblers have plenty of money saved from an off season of non betting, so they are gambling with the thought of if they lose, it will not hurt them.

As the season rolls on and these gamblers lose some money here, and some money there, they begin worrying about losing money they cannot afford to. It is at this time that the pendulum swings in the houses favor.

Any gambler will tell you that if you are gambling with scared money, you have no chance.

So when the season kicks off in a few weeks, good luck is wished to all people who put a wager on a football game, but just try to enjoy your early season winnings, and remember that feeling, because when you are throwing things in disgust come the halfway point of the year, you will need some good thoughts to carry you through the tough times.

Big East Aims for Another Successful Season

A few years after being left for dead by many in the college football world, the Big East experienced a rejuvenating — and surprising — season of success in 2006.

Besides the three teams ranked in the top dozen and the perfect 5-0 bowl record, perhaps the most stunning statistic of all came in the TV ratings. The two most-watched college games on ESPN all of last year didn’t come on a Saturday and didn’t involve powers Florida, Ohio State or Southern California. Instead, the nation tuned in to see West Virginia, Louisville and Rutgers.

“We had the highest ratings average of any conference on ESPN last year,” said the Big East’s Nick Carparelli, the associate commissioner in charge of football. “We had the second and third largest audiences for a regular-season game ever on ESPN. It was a great year TV-wise.”

Three years ago, Big East football was written off nationally after Miami and Virginia Tech left the conference for the ACC (Boston College followed in 2005). After a shaky season in 2004, the league has rebounded very well. In ’05, West Virginia rolled to an 11-1 season and had a big win over Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, a victory that Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese calls the most important in the history of the football league.

Last year, West Virginia, Louisville and Rutgers all got off to fast starts and a place in the top 10 in the national polls. Then, on successive Thursday nights, Louisville beat WVU, and Rutgers shocked the Cardinals. Both games drew ratings above 5.0 and nearly five million viewers on ESPN. Louisville eventually won a tight race for the conference title with a 6-1 record.

“Thursday night has become our version of Monday Night Football,” said Chuck Gerber, the executive vice president for college sports at ABC and ESPN, “and the Big East certainly bought into that. It offers national exclusivity with full national distribution. The exclusive window is priceless.

Louisville Preps for College World Series

The No. 8 ranked University of Louisville baseball team arrived in Omaha, Neb., Wednesday evening for the program's first ever appearance at the College World Series. U of L will face the No. 2 seeded Rice Owls in the 2007 College World Series opener Friday at 2 p.m. ET at historic Rosenblatt Stadium and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

The Cards (46-22) opened Wednesday by meeting with reporters and practicing for the final time at Jim Patterson Stadium before Friday's series opener against Rice (54-12). After arriving at Omaha Eppley Airfield at approximately 4:30 p.m. CT, the Cardinal players, coaches and support staff visited Rosenblatt Stadium for the first time prior to checking-in to the official team hotel.

U of L advanced to Omaha with Sunday's impressive 20-2 victory over Oklahoma State in the third and decisive game of the Super Regional. Prior to that, the Cards advanced through the Columbia (Mo.) Regional with back-to-back wins over No. 1 seeded Missouri. Rice returns to Omaha for the second consecutive year and the fourth time in the last six years after winning all five of its game in the 2007 NCAA tournament. The Owls won the 2003 College World Series championship, the school's first NCAA team title in any sport.

College World Series Set to Begin Friday

Cal State Fullerton will meet defending NCAA National Champion Oregon State in its 2007 College World Series opener on Saturday evening (June 16) at 4 p.m. PDT as the tournament pairings and game times have been announced by the NCAA.

The Titans and Beavers, who defeated Michigan by an 8-2 count on Monday to complete a sweep of their super regional series in Corvallis, Ore., will meet for the third time in the history of the two programs with Fullerton holding the 2-0 advantage in the series.

However, this will be the first meeting between the two schools in the postseason and the first time overall since the 1984 season.

Fullerton (38-23) will be the home team against Oregon State with the winner advancing to Monday's evening session against either UC Irvine or Arizona State, which open play against one another on Saturday at 11 a.m. PDT.

On the other side of the bracket, Louisville and No. 2-seeded Rice will open the College World Series on Friday morning (June 15) at 11 a.m. PDT, followed by Mississippi State and No. 3 North Carolina at 4 p.m. PDT.

The ESPN family of networks will broadcast the entire College World Series. Please check you local listings for channel information in your area. The Titans will also have their games broadcasted live over the Internet with Justin Alderson handling play-by-play duties.

Louisville clubbed Oklahoma State 20-2 Sunday to earn a 2-1 series win in the NCAA Super Regional and its first berth in the College World Series.

Louisville pounded out 21 hits and scored five runs in the second and fourth innings and four more in the fifth and eighth innings in the win.

The Cardinals (46-22) will meet Rice on Friday in the first round of the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Right fielder Pete Rodriguez led the way for the Cardinals on Sunday and in the series.

Left fielder Isaiah Howes went 3-6 with three runs scored and six RBIs and second baseman Logan Johnson was 3-4, scoring four runs.

Rebel Ridling led the Cowboys at the plate with three hits including a solo home run.

Jimmy Fallon Played Beer Pong Until 5 a.m. at Louisville Frat

Fallon Almost Missed Kentucky Derby After Frat Party

Former Saturday Night Live star Jimmy Fallon was among the many celebrities who attended the Kentucky Derby a few weeks back, but he almost didn't make it after spending the night before playing beer pong at a University of Louisville frat.

"I went to this nice tuxedo party at a mansion and as me and my girlfriend were leaving the valets parking the cars were from a fraternity, Fallon said"

"I said, 'So where's the party at?', just joking around," he continued. "They go, 'We'll have one if you come.' "So I said, 'Well, give me the address. We'll show up.' So we ended up going to this frat house in the University of Louisville and ended up playing beer pong until five in the morning."
