Four fraternities evicted from their chapters houses last spring at West Virginia University still aren't allowed to move back.

The university's Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Kappa Sigma were kicked out of their houses in May after officials found fire code violations, blocked entrances and exits and holes in ceilings.

Each fraternity was permitted to move back once it had each of the violations corrected, but all four are finding it difficult to raise enough money to help their cause.

Phi Delta Theta is planning to demolish its former house to build a new one, while Phi Kappa Sigma is working to complete a $3 million renovation before moving back in.

Phi Gamma Delta must repair over $500,000 in damages to parts of its chapter house that were in violation. The fraternity received 112 fire code violations before being forced to move out.

"It was never kept up from the 70s," Phi Gamma Delta President Julian Carvalho said. "Not having a central location has been a problem."

Brothers of Pi Kappa Phi are optimistic that by May they'll be able to move back in.

Brothers of West Virginia University's chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon have long road of retribution before make amends for stealing a tree from a Morgantown park and decorating it for Christmas.

Two students were said by police to have stolen a Blue Spruce tree from a nearby park and taken it to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house to serve as decoration. One was a brother of the fraternity, while the other was not.

The fraternity was placed on probation by the university, ordered to pay $1,100 in restitution and to perform 500 hours of community service.

Students Nathan Sisler, 20, and Nicholas Casey, 18, were said to have taken the spruce and were charged by police with injuring and destroying a tree.

The fraternity's president, oddly enough named Kirk Stump, said his group apologizes for the theft and plans to make things right.

"The community is very important to us and we want to do good and repair the rift," Stump said.

Missouri Takes Over Top Spot

Missouri is No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 for the second time in school history. The Tigers have to be hoping this stay is longer than the first.

Missouri became the fourth team this season - joining Southern California, LSU and Ohio State - to hold the top ranking, a day after beating Kansas 36-28 to earn a spot in the Big 12 championship game. Not since 1997 have so many teams been No. 1 in a season.

The Tigers' only other time at No. 1 lasted a week in 1960.

West Virginia moved up to No. 2 on Sunday, its highest ranking ever, and became the eighth team this season to be ranked second. The Mountaineers' 66-21 victory over Connecticut earned them the Big East title and knocked the Huskies out of the rankings.

No. 3 Ohio State, Georgia and LSU complete the top five.

6. Penn State Nittany Lions

- Paterno's boys are looking for respect early, crushing Florida International 0n Saturday 59-0. The Nittany Lions' first test will come this week when they take on Notre Dame. A huge win against the struggling Irish could help Penn State move up.

5. Wisconsin Badgers

- The Badgers came out fired up and look like they're ready to clash with Penn State for the Big Ten crown. Wisconsin knocked off Washington State 42-21 in their opener on Saturday.


4. Florida Gators

- The Gators clobbered Western Kentucky 49-3, as quarterback Tim Tebow threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns in his debut as the team's starter.


3. Louisiana State Tigers

- LSU opened the season with a big win over SEC conference rival Mississippi State on Thursday night. The Tigers hands down look like they have the nation's top defense. The true test will be this coming Saturday when they take on Virginia Tech.


2. Southern California Trojans

- It wasn't even close for a minute late Saturday night when USC toppled Idaho 38-10. Pete Carroll's offense looks like its clicking on all cylinders.


1. West Virginia Mountaineers

- The Mountaineers crushed cupcake Western Michigan on Saturday 62-24, scoring the most points the team has put up since 2001.

Two WVU Football Players Charged with Theft

Two West Virginia University football players were arrested over the weekend and charged with transferring and receiving stolen property.

James Thomas, 18, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Ellis Lankster, 21, of Whistler, Ala., were arrested early Sunday, Morgantown Police said in a news release.

Morgantown police didn't release any other details, but a police dispatcher who declined to give her name said Monday that the stolen property was a computer.

Coach Rich Rodriguez released a statement Sunday saying he was aware that Lankster, a junior defensive back, and Thomas, a redshirt freshman linebacker, had been involved in an off-campus situation.

"I am investigating at this time and will make the determination about their status within the football program after all the facts are in," Rodriguez said.

According to one report, both players were competing for starting spots and practicing with third-ranked West Virginia's first team.

Thomas is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt freshman linebacker whose father played linebacker for the Mountainers from 1994-95. Lankster, a 5-10, 190-pound cornerback who transferred from Jones County (Miss.) Junior College, enrolled in January.

Rodriguez recently announced that he had issued an 11 p.m. Saturday night curfew to keep players away from possible distractions.

Neither player participated in West Virginia's Fan Day activities Sunday.

'Pacman' Jones Admits to Selling, Smoking Pot

Titans cornerback Pacman Jones said he has no worries about his legal problems in Las Vegas.

In an interview with HBO's Bryant Gumbel that will air Tuesday night on "Real Sports", Jones simply said: “I know the truth is gonna come out, at the end of the day. ... And I'll tell you, 'I told you so.''

In the wide-ranging interview, Jones admitted to selling dope in his past and using marijuana, but said the last time was about three years ago. He said he doesn't use marijuana any more. The Tennessean obtained a transcript of the interview on Monday.

"Clean as a whistle,'' Jones said.

Gumbel was in town with a video crew last week to interview Jones at his home in Franklin. Jones was charged with two counts of felony coercion following a Feb. 19 shooting at Minxx Gentleman's Club in Las Vegas.

One bouncer was shot and remains paralyzed from the waist down. Jones was accused of using threat or force to prevent the club's bouncers from doing their jobs, authorities said.

He is currently serving a suspension from the NFL.

"Innocent bystander,'' Jones said of the incident in Las Vegas. "Wrong place, wrong time.

“… I guess I'm the big fish in the little pond. I never touched anybody; I never hit no girl; I never told any one of them that I was gonna kill them."

For the third consecutive season, West Virginia has the talent -- and the schedule -- to win the Big East, finish undefeated and qualify for the national championship game.

Defensive issues, particularly against the pass, have caused the Mountaineers to stub their toes in recent pursuits of those goals, but coaches believe they have addressed the problem and now are capable of finishing the job.

Trips to Maryland, South Florida and Rutgers will prove tricky, and a November game against a Louisville team that scored 88 points against WVU the past two seasons combined could have major ramifications.

If the Mountaineers survive those four games, there's no reason to believe a trip to New Orleans for the BCS title game won't be on their itinerary.

3. Louisiana State Tigers (compiled by AOL Sports)

Matt Flynn. Jacob Hester. Early Doucet. Glenn Dorsey. That covers the running, throwing, catching, and defending part. Those are this year's impact players.

Despite losing 9 starters, including #1 overall draft pick Jamarcus Russell, two O-linemen, two WRs and both safeties, LSU is poised to be the most talented team in the conference for the second year running.

Yeah, they're talented, all right. LSU is so freakin' talented it's positively stunning. Best in the SEC? Shoot, this might be the deepest, most athletic and most talented team in the nation, except for top-ranked USC, and even that's debatable.

If the SEC could be won by talent alone, we could forego the 2007 season and hand the conference title trophy to the Tigers and not bother playing any games. However, LSU bore that mantle last year, and not only did they fail to win the SEC, they finished third in their division.

The message? It takes more than talent; but talent will get you a long way.


2. Southern California Trojans (compiled by Big Red Network)

You’ve got to beat the best to be the best. That’s a saying in sports that goes back as far as anyone can remember.

It’s been especially true in college football. In 2005, Texas beat #1 USC to win the national championship. In 2002 it was Ohio State over Miami. This year the consensus going into the season is that USC is the best team in the country.

If Nebraska were to take out the Trojans in week 3 (and assuming the Huskers were unbeaten prior to the game) the Huskers could well assume the top spot in the country and might be favored in each of their remaining games until they lose.

That’s the dream anyway. But USC is ranked high for a reason. They look awfully good.

Lindy’s rates their defensive line, linebacking corps, and secondary each individually as tops in the nation. That makes their defense tops in the country – by a mile.

It’s not like their offense is chopped liver either. Their offensive backfield is ranked third in the country by Lindy’s and their offensive line second.

Only their receiving corps doesn’t merit a top ten ranking. Does that make their receivers a “weakness”? Hardly. USC can roll out 5-star recruits in wide receivers Patrick Turner and Vidal Hazelton and tight end Fred Davis as well as a bunch of three and four-star guys.

What they lack in experience they make up for with loads of talent.

Expectations haven't been higher since Rich Rodriguez took over West Virginia's football program seven seasons ago.

They couldn't be higher. They've hit the ceiling.

After 30 victories the past three seasons, back-to-back top 10 finishes, and consecutive New Year's Day bowl victories over the SEC champion and the ACC runner-up, the Mountaineers now have their eyes on one prize.

Everything looks to be in place for the Mountaineers to make a serious run at their first BCS title, and they just may have the 4.4 backfield speed to do it.

From an explosive option attack led by two Heisman Trophy candidates, to a fast-talking head coach who recently turned down the Alabama job, West Virginia is a team in the spotlight.

"West Virginia is on everyone's radar," ESPN college football analyst Todd Blackledge said.

West Virginia's Heisman hopefuls, runner Steve Slaton and quarterback Pat White, appeared unfazed by all the preseason pressure and hype as they opened fall practice Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium.

"We're kind of getting used to it," Slaton said. "Our goal every year is to go undefeated, win the Big East title, and play for the national championship. That's what you put in all the hard work for."

This time, national championship buzz goes beyond the Morgantown Mall. It's all over the Internet, cable channels and magazine stands.

"If West Virginia can make it through the Big East undefeated, it could find itself playing for the national championship," reported rivals.com.

3 WVU Frats Close Over Fire Code Violations

Three fraternities at West Virginia University won't have a house when brothers return to the Morgantown campus next fall after they were shut down by the fire chief for code violations.

Since the beginning of May, Phi Sigma Kappa, Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Gamma Delta have been closed because of lack of fire alarms and exits in their houses. The houses of Delta Tau Delta and Beta Theta Pi were also shut down in the past year because of similar violations.

WVVA-TV reported that the fire chief may not be done just yet in his rampage on fun in Morgantown. He was expected to inspect other houses Wednesday, they said.

A thief near the a branch campus of West Virginia University and Shepherd University in Martinsville, West Va., attempted to hold up a convenience store last Wednesday while covering his face with a nice pair of blue panties.

"I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried," a local police officer told a newspaper after the attempted robbery.

In addition to wearing the panties over his face, the man used a fake gun which was actually a lighter to try to persuade the cashier to give him money. The cashier thought it was just a joke and refused to give the man money.

The thief then took off in a Jeep, and police stopped the vehicle and charge the man, with among other things, attempted robbery, burglary and driving under the influence.

Police said they found the blue panties after and are using them as evidence.

A few different fraternities on WVU's campus have been in judicial trouble during the past year, but some of the Greek organizations are speaking out about getting a bad reputation.

Last week a 20-year-old Morgantown woman reported that she was sexually assaulted at the Phi Kappa Psi house on Spruce Street.

Earlier this semester, the Beta Theta Pi House got into some trouble for an overcrowding violation during a party and some financial problems. The acts of just a few individuals could taint the whole organization... making it difficult for others to fight negative stereotypes. Some fraternity members say they are adamant about instilling a sense of responsibility in all of their pledges.

More than 30 social organizations on campus who rack up more than 3,000 hours of community service every year. And through the community service... building leadership skills.. and keeping alumni ties strong.. fraternities say they'll keep working to maintain their organization
Morgantown Police are still conducting their investigation for the alleged sexual assault.

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity is working closely with the university to overcome their financial problems.

Woman Claims She Was Sexually Assaulted at WVU Frat

A woman claimed she was sexually assaulted about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house.

"She alleged that four males attempted to have sexual acts with her," said Morgantown Police Sgt. Harold Sperringer. "And as she attempted to leave, they would not permit her to leave."

"Based on circumstances that are beyond our control, we have not yet been able to interview the victim," he said. So far, police have not spoken with fraternity members. Sperringer said investigators need to talk with the victim first.

"(We need to) Try to get the details as to what happened and where that leads us to," he said.

Police say statistics show that only one in four sexual assaults get reported. And though it might not be the case in this particular incident, Sperringer said a lot of times there is alcohol involved. That can leave a lot of gray areas.

A WVU student who did not give his name said he was surprised to hear about the alleged incident. He said he's friends with some of the members and that they're all nice guys. The fraternity's advisor did not return a phone call and no one answered the door at Phi Kappa Psi house on Thursday.

''Now that the international fraternity has severed ties with the undergraduate men at West Virginia University, no student is an active member of any Delta Tau Delta chapter and should not hold himself out as such,'' said James B. Russell, the national executive vice president of the fraternity.

After being placed on suspension last August for its failure to meet the arch chapter's operating standards, Delta Tau Delta at WVU had their charter withdrawn in November. Delt officials claim that the WVU brothers have continued to violate the fraternity's values and alcohol policies.

The university has approved a possible 2009 return for the Delts if they can straighten out their relationship with the arch chapter.


WVU Student Paper Errors in Report

Fraternity suspended until 2009! shouted the headline, but alas, it was not so. The fact checker was asleep at the keyboard when WVU's Daily Athenaeum newspaper ran this headline:

The only problem is the Gamma chapter of Delta Tau Delta is not at WVU, it's almost fifty miles away at Washington & Jefferson College.

Actually, Gamma chapter is alive and well. In fact, "Gamma chapter is the oldest Delt chapter in continuous existence. It has never been closed in 143 years of operation", according to their website.

WVU, however, was the Gamma Delta chapter.

Beta Suspension Stirs Storm, But Changes Little

LJ Ulrich, a WVU columnist, wrote Tuesday that the "clouds have already started to blow over," following the suspension of the university's Beta Theta Pi chapter.

As reported on Frat Boy News earlier this week, a party came to an abrupt ending last Friday night when the Morgantown fire department responded to an overcrowded house. Following the party, the Beta house was condemned for fire code violations, and the fraternity was placed on suspension by the university until further notice.

Ulrich writes that the party, which was advertised on Facebook and had more than 500 people in attendance at times, will not hurt the fraternity in spring rush. At WVU in the past, similar fraternities have been on suspension during rush, and their numbers in enrollment remain the highest on campus.

WVU's Beta House Condemned

Pittsburgh, PA's Channel 4 WTAE-TV reported Monday that West Virginia University's Beta Theta Pi chapter's house will be condemned until their fire alarm codes are up to date.

The grievance was filed by the fire department after being called out to the campus' Beta house over the past weekend. Firefighters said that the house was overcrowded and was inhabitable until the alarm updates were completed. The WVU Betas will also be placed on suspension until a judicial review by the university takes place.
