Breaking Down ABC Family's 'Greek'

'Greek' premiered earlier this summer on ABC Family and since its debut their have been a number of mixed emotions from the actual Greek community on the show.

While some think in inaccurately portrays the life of fraternity men and sorority women at colleges around the country, some have come to accept the show for what it is and moved on.

We here at The Frat Boy News think television needed a show like this. Regardless of if it shows what college life is or not, college students know what life on campus is like and should be able to discern that from what they perceive as a false reality.

Today, with a little help from our friends at Wikipedia, we take the time to breakdown the shows cast of characters for all you avid viewers out there in TV land.

Rusty Cartwright (Jacob Zachar) - the good hearted, nerdy, freshman brother of Casey's from Chicago who wants to party and break out of his shell. He pledges Kappa Tau Gamma (ΚΤΓ) after declining Omega Chi Delta (ΩΧΔ). He is a virgin, and still feels slightly uncomfortable around girls. He is a Polymer science major. Cappie takes Rusty on as a Little Brother.

Casey Cartwright (Spencer Grammer) - Rusty's older sister who is vying to be the next president of Zeta Beta Zeta (ΖΒΖ) sorority.

Prior to Rusty arriving on campus, she did not let anyone know she had a brother. She is dating Evan Chambers. Her commitment to Zeta Beta Zeta keeps her from what she truly wants.

Casey knows dating Evan will help her become president, although it is usually shown that Evan is not truly the one for her. It is implied that she and Cappie were once boyfriend and girlfriend, and she describes their first time as something she looks back on with no regrets because they were in love.

After being paired with Cappie on a paper, they kiss once again, although Casey says she can't go back to what she had before.

Evan Chambers (Jake McDorman) - Casey's boyfriend, who is president of ΩΧΔ. Evan takes on Calvin as a Little Brother sometime after "Hazed and Confused". He slept with Rebecca Logan, but later claims he only did it because he was scared he and Casey were getting too serious.

Cappie (Scott M. Foster) - Casey's ex-boyfriend who befriends Rusty. He appears to still have strong feelings for Casey. He is the president of ΚΤΓ.

He and Casey were once boyfriend and girlfriend, and it says that they broke up, because Casey really did want to join the Zeta Beta's and they wouldn't allow her to be dating Cappie at the time.

They do get back together for one night, after Casey learns Evan slept with Rebecca Logan, though Casey returns to Evan afterwards. Cappie and Casey kiss once again near the end of season 1, though Casey once again goes back to Evan.

Cappie has two big quirks, one being his ability to make speeches parodying other famous speechs (such as the Gettysburg Address and Morpheus' speech in The Matrix), the other being a phrase he uses often, "I used to be a _______ Major." This includes, up to this point, Psychology, Biology, Physics, and Latin. Cappie, while lazy, is extremely intelligent, charismatic, and insightful, which often surprises other characters.

Calvin Owens (Paul James) - Rusty's friend, whom he met during rush. He pledges ΩΧΔ as a legacy. He is gay and in the closet, having had a bad experience when he came out in high school, with Rusty being the only person who knows. He is in a relationship with Heath from ΚΤΓ. During high school, he was also an all-state ice hockey player. He is shown to have a good friendship with Ashleigh.

Dale (Clark Duke) - Rusty's religious, nerdy roommate from Arkansas. He is a member of an abstinence group and a Left Behind club. He is also Rusty's roommate in his Honors Engineering class.

Ashleigh (Amber Stevens) - Casey's best friend at ΖΒΖ. She has a boyfriend named Travis, and even remains faithful to him, even though they hardly get to see each other and despite the fact that he acts like a jerk around others. She is thought to act dull and bland while around him, opposing her regular fun & interesting characteristics.

Rebecca Logan (Dilshad Vadsaria) - the Senator's daughter who was the major target in rush. Casey bribes her to pledge ΖΒΖ, to ensure her election as president, though their relationship deteriorates when Casey discovers her one night stand with Evan. Casey also makes Rebecca her Little Sister.

Frannie (Tiffany Dupont) - is president of the ZBZ sorority. Casey and Rebecca are battling about her attention. She usually doesn't think about what anyone else wants, only whats best for the sorority.

Jen K (Jessica Rose) - a ZBZ legacy who develops a crush on Rusty which leads to more at the ΚΤΓ Mount Vesuvius party. She is often naive and ditzy compared to the other sisters.

Heath (Zack Lively) - a ΚΤΓ brother. The first episode shows him in a physical relationship with Calvin.

Cal Kappa Sigs Correct Fire Code Violations

UC Berkeley Fraternity Members Return Home

Kappa Sigma fraternity members were allowed back into their house Monday at UC Berkeley after the city fire department had sent them packing last week for violating fire codes.

About 20 students from the house spent the weekend at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza, Assistant Fire Chief David Orth said.

The house violated a Berkeley law requiring fire sprinklers be installed and tested in buildings with multiple tenants, Orth said. The Berkeley law was enacted after three students died at the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house during a fire in 1990, he said.

Orth said the Kappa Sigma house was inspected at the end of the spring semester as members were moving out for the summer. During that inspection, the department found that fire sprinklers were painted over and would not work. Last Thursday, when inspectors returned, they found that nothing had changed, Orth said.

"They (Kappa Sigma members) were told last spring not to occupy the building and lo and behold, they did," said Orth. "During the inspection Thursday we found a number of sleeping students recovering from the night before. We also found three students hiding. These are college students, but they are not smart."

The house passed an inspection by the fire department Monday afternoon.

Fraternity members and building management officials declined to comment.

The fire department Thursday also found that furniture was piled in hallways, blocking emergency exits.

"They got behind on their construction work, and they screwed it up," Orth said. "And we couldn't have them staying in the house without the sprinklers working."

Fraternity Suffers Hazing Fallout

Students returning the California State University in Chico this fall may notice a considerable difference on campus as Beta Theta Pi fraternity won't be active this school year.

"We've lost 40 good guys," said Greg Bruce, a Sigma Pi brother and the university's IFC president. Beta Theta Pi was disbanded on the campus after a university investigation into a hazing incident cause the fraternity to lose its national chapter's recognition.

Brothers of the fraternity were said to have forced pledges to submerge in a bathtub filled with ice and water until they answered a series of questions. They were also said to have locked pledges in a closet where they threw beer and other disgusting things at them, reports said.

Boise State Wants Greek Life to Grow

BSU Looks to Grow More Greek Life

With a record number of students enrolled at Boise State University, the campus hopes to see a rise in the number of students participating in Greek Life.

"A lot of the students on campus don't actually know that there are Greeks on campus, let a lone what a Greek is," said Kappa Sigma president Craig Whitten.

One problem Boise State must overcome to see the expansion is for its fraternities and sororities to have their own houses on campus where new members can call home.

"It's not going to be the houses that will hold 75 to 120 people that's just not feasible for a metropolitan university," a campus official said.

Mississippi State Looks to Upset LSU in Season Opener

As the college football season opens, there is even optimism at Mississippi State -- where the Bulldogs haven't had a winning season since 2000.

Season ticket sales are up in Starkville and coach Sylvester Croom believes in his fourth season at Mississippi State he's finally got a team that can compete in the Southeastern Conference.

"People are very passionate about Mississippi State football and I'm looking forward to this game and this season with a great deal of excitement," Croom said.

If recent history holds, the excitement will have worn off by halftime. The Bulldogs have lost seven straight to No. 2 LSU by a total of 295-81, including shutouts of 51-0 and 42-0. Last year the Tigers led 21-0 after one quarter and 35-3 at halftime before winning 48-17.

Croom said his players don't need reminding about what LSU can do.

"They understand if they're not ready to play from the first whistle that could happen again because they're a very explosive football team," he said.

LSU coach Les Miles said his team shouldn't take the Bulldogs lightly despite their recent troubles.

Mississippi State hasn't won more than three games in a season since 2000 and are finally off NCAA probation. But Miles saw improvement by the Bulldogs when he reviewed film from last season and calls them "conceptually very good."

Students Sneak Weed Into Bethany Inside Soccer Ball

Police said two Bethany College students went great lengths just to get marijuana onto campus.

According to the Brooke County Sheriff's Department, two Canadian students may face misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges after they received an ounce in the mail and tried to get the drugs across the border inside a soccer ball.

Sheriff Rich Ferguson said the suspects sliced the soccer ball, stuffed the marijuana inside a plastic bag and covered it with Vaseline.

The sheriff said they are meeting and discussing charges.

There is no word if the students will be suspended from school.

Over 100 Ball State Students Already Busted for Drinking

The Frat Boy News Daily Police Report

Ball State University (compiled by Chris Sutter, Newslink Indiana)

Over 100 students have been arrested on the Ball State University campus since the beginning of the school year. Gene Burton, Public Safety Director for Ball State said, "the past two weekends, from my point of view, they've been fairly typical first weekends of the academic year."

Zeta Beta Tau was a fraternity that felt the hardest impact of Ball State's crackdown. President Nathan Elsworth said his frat was nearly shut down due to the number of underage drinkers.

"There were some people that went back to the dorms and they were questioned and I guess drew all those questions and basically came back and mentioned us and from what I know the police were called right away and they were here I guess in a few minutes," Elsworth said.

Kaytee Bryns was one of those students partying on frat row. She said the tactics the BSU police Department used were unbelievable.

"Me and my roommate came home and just decided to go to bed because we had been drinking...obviously...and we were woken up about an hour later by the RA's [resident assistants] and then by the cops and they made us blow and then wrote us tickets and told us to go back to bed. So we woke up in the morning to tickets...thinking it was a bad nightmare," Bryns said.

The BSU sophomore says she has hired a lawyer, and plans to deal with the unorthodox policing used in issuing her a ticket for underage drinking. Until then, she plans on a lot of alcohol-free nights in her Ball State dorm room.
